Just got a Cyberball 4-Player cab with issues. Needs some tips!
« on: January 21, 2009, 11:54:00 pm »
Hey guys,

Just picked this up tonight (for FREE):

When it comes on the screen is completely white. Nothing else happens. Any Cyberball owners here that have seen that? I've checked the fuses and they are OK. All connections seem to be fine as well.

Any tips for this would be great. Thanks!

Hey David, have you checked the monitor adjustments yet? Maybe the brightness and/or screen pots are turned way too far up? I'm not that great at troubleshooting though - my experience working on games is still pretty limited. You might want to try the "Repair and Help" forum at KLOV. That's a better place for help on arcade game hardware generally. You could also start a thread in the Restorations section here to document your progress, like I've done.

I'll check later tonight on the test switch like I promised. Hopefully in around 3 hours (have plans directly after work).

Can't wait to see progress bringing it to life!

I'm far from knowledgeable about these things, but screen response+no game picture surely = busted PCB?

Yup... start by grabbing the manual and then checking the powers supply for proper voltages. Gotta get the game to coin up and make some noise before looking at much else.

I don't think they are for sale somewhere. You'd have to find some used or NOS ones on ebay or something. They're not hall effect btw (at least not on my cyberball). There is a rebuild service for the sticks at videogameparts.com (search for "atari joysticks").

Okay so you guys will NOT believe this... I decided to give it another go of working on the Cyberball and failed miserably at making any headway. I then relegated myself to cleaning the cab since I was out in the garage anyway. I started by pulling off both control panels to clean the buttons and sticks. It was owned by a smoker and the stick sockets where caked in ashes. I get both panels off and start cleaning. After about a half an hour I decide to take a break and play some Tron. I turn on my machines (they're all on a heavy duty power strip) and realize I've left the Cyberball plugged in and switched on.

The%@)#&@%^!!! machine came up and WORKED.

Long story short one of the buttons had become jammed in and prevented the machine from booting up. I confirmed this by reattaching the Control Panels and the machine stopped working. Detached the microswitch attached to the button in question and POOF... works perfectly.

Can you believe that? A single microswitch stuck in the on position kept it from working.

Lucky! The closest I can come to finding a game with that kind of fix was a "Ninja Clowns" in a Ms Pac that I bought with a "dead monitor". Connecting the monitor to the AC outlet and flipping a dip switch cured the mysterious dead monitor. I guess everybody get one, eh?
