UK MDF =18mm 3/4 T-Moulding =19mm
« on: January 06, 2009, 05:12:36 am »
Hello let me introduce myself. My name is Jim im in the UK and I am starting on a Mame cab.

My firstpost/question is realy aimed at UK builders.

All main DIY store Wikes,B+Q etc have MDF which is 18mm (the closest to 19mm/ 3/4 in) so I would have to use 19mm tmoulding which would overhang either side.

What thickness MDF do you guys in the UK use?
Where did you get it ie which store?
Which size t-moulding did you use?

 :)Many thanks

Jimbo

Hello Jim. Welcome to the forum from another UK Byoac'r  :)

3/4" (19.05mm) t-moulding is fine to use on 18mm MDF, you will only have ~0.5mm overhang either side which will barely be noticeable. If you really are concerned about the overhang you can trim the edge, take a look at [this] thread (which is coincidentally right below this one at the moment in time.

Note you wont be able to trim the t-moulding if you are using chrome/gold as it is generally white t-moulding with a layer of metallic chrome/gold film.

I have used 3/4" chrome t-moulding with 18mm MDF successfully on a couple of projects so far.

I bought mine from http://t-molding.com/store/home.php. They have a good selection and shipping from the US has always been fairly fast.

Edit: Must have posted at the same time Jimbo!

Thanks for that I feel more reasured now!

I was trying to think of a 'clean' way of trimming the overhang if it annoyed me. A simple solution eh?

As soon as I get a donor pc and manage to clean out my garage I will start a building thread.

Well if you laminate your MDF with 0.6mm formica on each side you will basically be out by 0.1mm on each side! That is what I plan on doing anyway!
