Johnny5 help - will not load mame .cfg files

Hi all. I'm having an issue where I am changing the controls within MAME(on a per game basis) but it is being ignored by Johnny5. As an example on the default layout, I try reassigning Gridlee fire button to keystroke 'v' but it never changes. I've tried just about everything I can think of. I have the Johnny5 Layout Editor Options>viewer set to the MAME path and exe. Is it supposed to check the C:\mame\cfg folder automatically for the button assignments? Anyone have any idea? I am using the latest versions of MAME & MAME32. Any help in the right direction would be appreciated
