The thing that struck me as odd was the 1l free refill "buckets".

That is odd, the places I go to have unlimited refills.

No, it is just the opposite problem. Guys that have a hard time gaining weight just don't normally eat enough calories to grow given their metabolism. A lot of bodybuilders started out really small, but if you keep piling on the calories, you will put on weight.

i see what you mean, but quite important is a high intake of protein as well, its what your muscles are made of. also, since im eating more now, it feels like not only my stomach is full, but my esophagus as well! not a nice feeling. this means it really is hard  for me to eat enough...

i know people will disagree but you don't need a high protein diet to build muscle
