Having just watched QoS right after Casino Royale, the movie makes a LOT more sense.  It is littered with references that go back to Casino Royale and, also, reveals information that will only be meaningful in later movies!

In fact I am getting the feel that the new JB is more like 24 - an ongoing story, gritty realism, countries at stake, desperation, and a tough as nails hero who, in reality, is quite short (Keifer Sutherland is only 5'9", although the Jack Bauer character is actually meant to be 5'11").

are you talking about daniel craig being short, or just sutherland?

To be precise, it was other people on this thread that called daniel craig short.  He is 5'10", which is neither tall nor short really.  However, mostly we expect action heros to be a bit bigger.  Heck, it doesn't really matter so long as there are enough boxes around to stand on when shooting close-up scenes.

right. i thought he was 5' 11". but the complaint is still the same. its not that hes particularly short (in fact im sure thats above average height), just that ian fleming specifically made bond his own height, which is tall. but like you say, with clever filming and such, even tom cruise can look tall  ;D

James Bond is described as 183cm (6 foot) tall. Nobody ever complained that Sean Connery was 2 inches too tall or that he was too fat.

Sean Connery was otherwise so perfect for the JB role,  that a couple of inches either way wasn't an issue.  Connery was an essential part of making the Bond legend what it is today.  I've never though Connery fat, although I did notice just how slim he was in Dr No (the very first Bond movie).

When I watched "A View to a Kill", I really noticed just how fat Roger Moore had gotten (he really looked like he would have trouble moving quickly), as compared to the slim roger in the early movies.

To me, Daniel Craig has never seemed short onscreen.  By contrast, Keifer Sutherland does come across as short at times.  Only 1 inch difference!  That might have something to do with quality of filming and editing though.  Both great "tough guy" actors though, thus proving that size doesn't (really) matter.
