M.A.M.E. and Killer Instinct

Hello all,
I have been successfully using mame 0.103u2 to play Killer Instinct 1 & 2 and all of my other favorite roms for  a while now and I found a very cool program here from fronty-dev called DS Knocker for Q-bert. I noticed that DS Knocker only works with mame v 111 or higher. Ok, well I tried the latest version of mame and now Killer Instinct runs slooow and the sound is choppy.  So I down graded to mame v 0.112 and Killer Instinct runs poorly on that version as well.  But if I go back to mame 0.103u2, Killer Instinct works great. But I'd like to use DS Knocker so Q-bert will a bit more authentic with the knocker sound.
Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be?

My computer specs are as follows,
P-4 2.0ghz H.T.
1gb DDR ram
256mb GeForce PCI graphics card,
Win XP Media Center 2005 w/ sp2
21" crt monitor
 Also I tried playing around with the graphics settings in the newer mame versions and still no success.  :banghead:

No idea what's wrong, but why not keep using 0.103u2 to play Killer Instinct and your other favorites, and just use .111 or .112 to play Q*Bert?
I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.

I hear the latest version made some good speedups in KI (but many others slowed down). 

But if your using a frontend, most can handle more then one version of mame.  Many doesn't do it well though :(

I think Atomic FE can?
also I never used it but I think Game launcher can
