12v is not needed.... the main question will be whether or not you have volume control on the game pcb or somewhere in an on screen menu.
Really depends on what JAMMA game it is you are putting in.

honestly im not sure if the pcb has a volume control on it, however my taito cab on the back has a volume knob attached to a mini pcb. not sure if the Gun.Smoke PCB has a volume control on it directly. I noticed that 2 wires were soddered into the volume mini pcb, and it has a molex with 4 wires comming back out. Only 2 wires are going to the speaker which i would guess is positive and negative, which have been cut. The 4 wire off the molex from the mini volume control knob are also cut. and one of the soddered wires on the volume control pcb is also unattached.

right now i just tried messing with it and the speaker is making a thumpering continious popping noise. The volume knob works because as I adjust it the thumpering / popping noises gets louder.

JAMMA boards were designed to connect directly to speakers (not amplifier computer speakers). The amplifier and volume control are on the board.

Jamma pin "L" goes to speaker "-" terminal. (mono or if stereo this is the left speaker)

Jamma pin "10" goes to speaker "+" terminal. (mono or if stereo this is the left speaker)

Jamma pin "M" goes to speaker "-" terminal. (right speaker if a stereo cabinet, not used if mono)

Jamma pin "11" goes to speaker "+" terminal (right speaker if a stereo cabinet, not used if mono)

Thanks Ken! I got it working !! i bypassed the volume knob as you said and just wire up the -, +. Do you happen to know if this game is mono or stereo ? im guessing mono from 1985. Also the current speaker sounds like crap what should i replace it with ? i know its probably like 5-10 bucks so i don't mind snagging a new one "taito cab"

Some boards have stereo off of a connector elsewhere on the board. Look for pins marked L and R ...
As for speaker replacement... replace with SAME.
NO MORE!!

off topic, but i was pulling out my hair because my marquee wasn't lighting up either.. turns out luckily i had a spare bulb around the number "44's" and i had a total of 8 bad bulbs ! one in my coin door and 7 in the marquee. Where can i buy cheap "44's" locally ?

Radio Shack # 272-1108 is a two pack of # 44 miniature lamps.

Also look in your local telephone directory "Yellow Pages" under the heading of "Electronic equipment & Supplies" for an electronic parts dealer. Quite frequently they carry miniature lamps.

Gunsmoke has mono speaker output. I don't think a Gunsmoke board is JAMMA though.

It's not..... he's using a Capcom / JAMMA adapter if I recall from another post.

That's correct, I just need Tim to re-send me the adaptor with the proper jumper wires so that my third "shoot / fire right" button works and i'm almost all set
