Alternative to a Neo-Geo Mini Marquee light, Hack?
« on: September 16, 2008, 11:49:39 pm »
I am restoring my first Neo cab (4 slot) right now and am having problems getting the 4 Mini Marquee lights to work.
I have come to the conclusion they are dead and I hear (and have noticed) they are a bit hard to find.

I'm wondering if anyone's heard of an alternative or hack of some sort to replace these little ---daisies---.  As long as they light up individually, nice and bight, it's not gonna hurt my feelings that it isn't 100% "authentic". You wont be able to see them anyway.

Any ideas?

BTW, This project just kind of fell into my lap. I was on my daily craigslist check and behold I saw "Free NeoGeo cabinet". Included a new monitor, 4 slot MoBo, and 4 games!!! And it was literally 2 blocks away from my house! Some days you just get lucky...

HA! love the censorship. "Daisies"
I didn't even think that was considered vulgar. Offspring of unmarried parents?

What voltage are the original panels? Perhaps you can use some ready-made LED lighting, and then still keep the ability to individually light each panel with the control unit.
NO MORE!!

Malenko:
I considered your idea but I want them individually lit so the game you are playing is only on.

RayB:
Not sure, I'm gonna check tonight. That's kind of the idea I've been considering.

I'll post what I find...

Thanks guys!

Best of luck! I tried for a while before settling on what I did. I dont need the marquee lit up to tell me what game Im playing ;)  If you do find a way post it up, and I'll pass it along to the guy who bought my 4 slot cab

A free 4 slot machine with games?  That's a really awesome deal.  To fix the lights you need to get new sheets of Electroluminescent paper.  You just need to cut them down to the correct size and then make sure you leave some of the little metal embedded strip exposed.  Then solder some wires from the metal strip to the EL panel.  Just make sure you get the white sheets, not blue.  I have a 6 slot with some dead panels but I haven't broken down to replace them.  Besides, I only have 3 or 4 MM, so there's not a pressing need to do it yet.  Here's a link to an example sheet: http://cgi.ebay.com/A5-size-electroluminescent-sheet-El-back-light-panel_W0QQitemZ110276695111QQcmdZViewItem?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116 .  You only need the sheet, not the inverter, your existing PCB does all the work.
