MAME help for running games like Strider II
« on: October 03, 2014, 09:57:23 am »
I am trying to run Strider II in MAME, but it keeps freezing/crashing up on me. I know my PC specs are not to blame, and from what I have read, it might have something to do with the zinc drivers? I don't know, I couldn't really dig up any help on the subject.

Has anyone gotten Strider II to work in MAME without crashing? I am not trying to use ZINC emulator as I am using Hyperspin and would prefer to keep it to one wheel.

Thank you.

What version are you running?

It definitely used to randomly crash in older versions, there's even an MT bug for it
http://mametesters.org/view.php?id=2519

(a number of PSX games were randomly crashing in the same way)

However since then a LOT of work has been done on the Playstation drivers (last time I checked the bug was in 2011) so maybe it's more stable now.

Of course if you are running a current version and still seeing the crashes, then I guess you've confirmed the bug as still being present.

I am using Mame 0.152b which isn't very old I don't think. Could be wrong though. I have no clue if I have the latest zinc driver...if that's even a thing I don't know.

I just REALLY don't want to update my romset.

yeah, it still freezes, just did it on the 'Gravity Core' boss for me, there's no solution when using MAME for this one I'm afraid.

Thank you for letting me know...suppose I'll need to find another way. This game is great.

tbh I've never liked it, and I don't think that many people do either, hence why people rarely comment on the fact it basically doesn't work ;-)

As far as sequels to Strider go I think the only good one was 'Osman' (same lead developer / designer, but not published by Capcom, so couldn't use the same character / name)

Your best bet if you really want Strider 2 might be the Playstation release in a Playstation emulator, I think it was a straight arcade port.

Man...I had never heard of it, but I thought the gameplay was awesome! Steam has a new addition to the series and it looks really cool.

You know in all the years of my arcade obsession, I've only just found out about osman and I've got to say it's awesome (and more importantly, plays flawlessly).  I can't believe i've only just heard of this game (I even already had it on my machine and didn't even have it in my game list! )  I have a version of strider 2 on my megadrive emulator, however I'm not sure it's the same version since this is 2d much like the original, rather than the later 2.5D offering we have on mame and playstation.  I think my version is known as strider returns, so yeah i guess I didn't really help much there lol

Apparently Strider Returns is not even from the same developers or something. Guess it's a bad "sequel"

Oh yeah, I've just looked it up.  It was released by us gold, which was responsible for a lot of console games in the late 80's-90's, still under license from capcom usa. I'm surprised they were allowed to do this since capcom later ignored this title entirely and released a sequel in 1999.  Apparently they also released a fighting game called human killing machine, which was a direct rip off of streetfighter.  I don't think they would get away with this nowadays.  I'm guessing it was just a way to get these games ported onto home computers, since capcom were not set to release them at that time, they got around to it later.  I did nearly buy street fighter 2 on the zx spectrum but my dad talked me out of it too close to christmas.  Anyway later that year i got an amiga, so I'm glad i never got around to playing it on the spectrum because from the screenshots I've seen, it was horrible and about 2 generations behind the amiga.  Anyway, slightly off topic here, but I love nostalgia and I always think it's funny looking back at how things have changed.

Back on topic however!   mmmm  does strider 2 require a cps1, cps2 or cps3 type emulator to run?  Or can you just use normal mame?  I seem to remember when I first started to download roms that I had to run neo geo through a neo geo emulator like neorage, and cps2 roms like cadillacs vs dinosaurs for instance I had to run through a cps2 emulator though final burn or similar.

Apparently ZINC runs it with no issues at all. Only problem is, I'd like to still be able to launch it within the same Hyperspin wheel as all of my MAME roms. I think it's possible with a script, but no idea where to start.

Mmmm.  not sure about hyperspin, but I know in mala you can set an emulator up to run bat files, granted you would need a bat file for each game.  Not sure if that helps?
