Author Topic: Ms. Pac/Galaga off CL. Score! Update Pics. (Read 4972 times)

OK, so basically I was lucky enough to score a Ms. Pac and Galaga off CL (2 days ago) for $100 each. Seller said both power-up, but don't play. I pick them up and got them home, here they are:

I've been side-tracked at my job for both days since, and finally today, I got home and dragged out an ext. cord to Ms. Pac. I plugged her in and pulled out the interlock in back and I immediately hear the monitor fire up with a nice static-pop sound as it came to life. I walk around to the front and to my pleasant surprise, there is a picture. So I wipe-down the screen and the monitor and, despite the bright sun outside, you can clearly see the game on screen. The problem is that:

1. The gamescreen is backwards, not upside down. Is that cocktail mode?
2. The Left/Right direction is reversed. So when I move the joystick left, Ms Pac goes right, vice-versa.
3. The game is on FreePlay.

And, it has a TWOBITS ABC card in place of the daughter board:

So my question is: How do I get it out of reverse mode? Out of FreePlay? Etc. with this TWOBITS card on it?

I was able to get it out of freeplay with the dips. But, there is no dip-setting for a "Reverse" mode. Or a cocktail mode for that matter.

I can't help your problem, but I did want to stop by and say nice score! I just try not to look at the CPO on the Galaga.

We will be seeing some new threads in the resto forum from you, correct?

I got it fixed. Modessit told me to switch the Green and Yellow yoke wires on the monitor and it worked like a charm. Only took a minute. WOOT!!

Yep. I'm gonna need a lot of input. The Galaga was on located in the ladies backyard cover patio next to her sliding glass door. Well, over the years, as she sprayed down her patio concrete she didn't bother to protect the Galaga and so the wood is swollen with dry rot up about 6 inches from the bottom all the way around the cab. And worse, both sides are pulling apart from the cab in those areas.

Lucky! I assume you haven't otherwise you would have said it already, but have you fired up the Galaga yet? Sounds like that rot and separation are gonna be fun.

Yes it is.

I got rid of that monitor, it was out of wack and skewed, so I pulled the monitor out of the Galaga and luckily, the Galaga monitor (WG K4906) still works.

Ya, unfortunately, the Galaga didn't come up. The marquee light works and the monitor powered on but no game on screen. Haven't had a chance to pull the boards, etc. but the monitor is now in the Ms Pac and I order a Galaga Switcher adapter from Bob Roberts. Once I get clean power...I will start trouble shooting the Galaga board.

***UPDATE***

So, it was time to finally address Galaga. When I plugged it in, the monitor and light and speaker were fine, but no game board sounds or anything on screen. I looked at the power pcb and it had some burn marks and jumper hacks on it and I suspect it was probably toast. So I ordered Bob Roberts Galaga switching PS w/ adapter for 45.00. It arrived today and I installed it:

I powered it on and I heard the board test mode over the speaker. So I turned it off, pulled the monitor back over to the Galaga from the Ms. Pac machine and powered it on again and it got stuck on this screen and kept resetting over and over as I opened the coin door:

So I looked back inside the coin door and the black test switch was on test mode...I slid that switch over, it reset and this time...it went through and the game came up and I played a few games:

...and like Ms. Pac...this one needs clean up and some major body repair from water damage. But for a total of 200.00 + (45.00 to Bob) for a working Galaga and Ms. Pac. I'm a happy camper.

Ya, since I bought them "non-working"...and didn't have to do much to get to work...it is very cool. I always wanted a Galaga. The Ms. Pac is my second one, so I suspect I'll actually make a profit here and have a Galaga as part of it. Sweeet!

Congratulations! What a great score! You must be the kind of daily CL checker that gets to anything I've ever seen on CL first. I can only imagine how happy you were when they both ended up working.

It was pretty kewl. But I actually thought for sure I was too late cause it was such a great deal. I emailed 4 hours after she posted not even expecting a response back.

She emailed me back..."You realize it's 100 a piece right?"

I emailed back..."Oh yes, in cash. And it's a firm commitment from me." Gave her my number etc.

I was just lucky, most of the time, I have the same bad luck most do - too late.

That's good luck for sure. Around here you have about 90 seconds to get that deal done.

For sure. I'm glad I'm in no rush to get some new cabs (when we eventually move to a different house I'll have more room for cabs), so right now I'm monitoring CL multiple times a day. Mainly I'm trying to get a feel for the market here, but if I come across a can't-pass-up deal, I'll find somewhere to put it! I inquired about what looked like a really good deal on a SF2 cab recently and when I heard back from the guy it was gone.

Moral of the story: if it looks like a good enough deal that you're wanting to buy, don't delay. Drive over to the seller and check it out - you can ask questions once you get there, but if you email a bunch of questions on a low priced cab, you're likely to lose out on it! Or at the very least call rather than email.

I already have a Ms. Pac. No need for me keeping this second one. Just selling it to get my investment back.
