Has anyone ever tried to build this....
« on: June 10, 2003, 12:11:01 pm »
Has anyone out there ever tried to build a Projection TV using a kit like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2733609115&category=174&rd=1

Pac Man on an 11' screen  ;D

I think I'd crap myself!

Sounds like it's worth trying out for $7

Hey man!

Don't bother - it's crap.  It uses one of those flat magnifying glasses to enlarge the picuture.  I forget the name off the top of my head.

If you want to do more research on it, do a Google on projection TV, or see http://100inchtv.com/

Edit: don't bother with the site I posted.  It's crap too.

It gives you something to play with but nothing that is really useable.   The site below gives the plans to you before you buy so you can see what you are getting and judge for yourself.  The limitations are, poor lens, lack of drive from TV etc.  Well what can you expect for $10.

Proj TV Plans

There are some other web sites where they are building real proj TVs with LCD displays, projection lenses and proj bulb with fan cooling.  Try google if interested.

I made a small one and it didn't look all that great! The web sites seem to make it look better then when you build it! Also everthing ends up being backwards and reversed, you need to flip the screen around with a mirror, or like I was going to do via ArcadeOS.  Anyways, you can buy the frensel lens at one of those big chain book store and it only cost around $5, didn't find this out until after I already bought on e-bay! Ugh  Luickily I only paid like $7 for it!

You might also want to look at the sellers feedbacks,  looks like a lot of people stating that it wasn't what they expected!

For the simple LCD projector what u can do is get a overhead projector and a sony PS1 screen then u take the back off and remove the lighitng fixture then u mount some black cardboard over the LCD (make sure to cut a hole for the actual display) then u put it ontop of the overhead projector and your done :)

Altho u can do something better thats just a quick idea as i have built a LCD and a Frensal lens projector (the pics on that guys site are fake btw if u look on ebay and u see the guy infront fo the projected image u can see he was just put into photoshop and set the image to blend onto him) but its not worth it i had it and it looked craped a tv or monitor just dosent pproduce enough light to make it bright enough for a good image

when sony charges 3 thousand for it, and you see this for 10 bucks, there are going to be a few differences ;)

i'd say that building a arcade cab. is slightly less demanding than creating a quality projection tv to display over 100 inches. but i would be interested in seeing what comes of this. whoever decides to do this, you've gotta give us some reviews, pics, etc. if it turns out, maybe a novel idea...

I would like to hear or see more of what Nin wrote.  Sounds like an interesting project if it has a decent picture.

Any info would be great

there's also the video forum on the DIYaudio site

the results from using an OHP and a standard PC LCD screen are incredible!

Well 1 thing u have to learn is the picture u see on the net for the frensal lens are fake its a simple trick in photoshop

they just overlay a screenshot onto the person

But the LCD 1's are great if u actually read how projectors work u will relise that using the method i mentioned is a simple and easy idea and it works.

The 1 problem is that if u make the image to big u will see the pixels on the projected image but a 5" sony LCD will work and look great at 85 inch diagonal

So thats pretty good and the price of the sony LCD is $85 so u cant go wrong :) altho it only takes composite in (can convert s-video to composite) it looks great and the good thing is dreamcast or any video game looks SICK

But i'll let u guys on a secret

The way i worked out was u go on ebay and buy a projector for $100 that works but needs a bulb (bulbs cost over $1000 so people get new 1's usally) and what u do is take the top cover of the unit off and then u make a new box for this unit and u get a 500watt lightbulb from the hardware store (its the outside light) and u use that to light up the LCD display

You cant use normal bulbs or a few 100watt globes together it dosent work 2 well and doing the mod i just said makes it brand new and the bulbs only cost $20 ;)

But my mate has his LCD projector he built up so i'll wait till he gets back from korea and get him to take a image.

Right now im using a 2" handheld tv and im gonna see if using the lens off a old movie projector will work and see what i come up with :)

But 1 thing u must remember is the bulbs get very HOT so you need to cool them by pc fans etc and the overhead projector 1 should be not to close to the LCD as it will melt it but no light must get out of it either as then the whole room is bright

But am i making any sense 2 u guys?  ;D

BTW when i said SICK i ment good :)

Here is a very quick n dirty image i made to show u how easy it is to fake a projector

http://www.csl.sony.co.jp/person/rekimoto/holowall/Holo_wall_wall_right.gif

thats the base image i had

then i got a image of shrek off google (google loves u ;)) and resized it to be onto the display

As you can see it is very simple to fake the image altho i coudlnt find the best images on the net u can still cant tell its fake if u never saw the orignal image

U can tell its been edited as i didnt take out them image that was on the background of the screen in the orignal but now u know faking is easy :)

Also u can tell there fake by how sharp the image is on the auctions its just a dvd screen cap not even a real projector will show u it that clear

and the frensal lens wont show up enough light for a image to showup on a digital cam or a normal cam i have tryed it its not really even enough for u to see basiclly but u do get a image which is a nice project if u just pay $1 for the lens at a newsagency and use cardboard boxes :)
