I am not sure if I saw a gigantic monster from another planet/dimension if I would just run. I mean, it's a pretty cool thing to behold. Then again, when a grasshopper lands on me I flip out and squeal like a girl. :)

I feel certain I wouldn't have been bothered by the ending if the military didn't drive by afterwards.  If the military doesn't show up, you're left with, "he did the right thing."

All you're left with when they do show up with is, "Could I live with myself after doing that, now knowing if I'd waited another minute, salvation would have arrived?  Probably not."

The military ending was an unnecessary twist to an otherwise decent movie.

What's the point of seeing the SAME EXACT THING as you've already read?
Saying that a movie adaptation of a book was too much like the book is not a complaint I often hear.

Also, am I the only one who saw that exact ending coming from the moment the car ran out of gas and they looked around at each other?  The only thing worse then a stupid twist ending is a stupid twist ending you see coming a mile away.  (well thats not entirely true, stupid twist endings that make zero sense are the worst of all, such as the movie High Tension).

Just did a little searching and it looks like someone reedited the ending to make it closer to the book:
*ending of the movie, so obviously it's spoiler central if you haven't seen it*

If the movie would have ended with him walking off into the mist with shapes moving in the distance, then going black - it would have been a very good ending. I did like that new ending posted above. The final shot of the mist covered Earth is pretty bad-ass.

The army showing up was utterly retarded. Even more so after showing that HUGE monster walking past them. Yeah sure, 3 or 4 flame throwers will surely take care of that... ::)

As much as you hate the twist ending, here you are still yakking about it.

which would show how much I didn't like it...

If I thought the ending was okay, then there would be no reason to talk about it.

Let me put it this way:

People whining about the ending in this thread prompted me to go see the movie.

I think the director knew what he was doing.  ;D

So your saying the director purposely ruined an almost great movie, so that people would talk about how he ruined it?  Thats a very odd director.  Seems like most directors would want people to talk about how great their movie is, not about how they screwed up.

Well since you like to go see movies that have a bad twist endings, I'd recommend you rent High Tension which has possibly the worst twist ending of any movie I've ever seen.  It just doesn't make any sense to the rest of the movie.

...but it was  a bad ass suspense/horror movie up until then.
Yes, the twist ending contradicted WAY too many previous happenings in the movie.

Sorry to continue this thread that has run its course, but I think it's funny to call the film "Stephen King's The Mist."
He authored the original story upon which the film is based, but I don't think it's fair to accuse him of actually being the mist. :)
