My cabinet keeps locking up with shooting games.
« on: August 09, 2008, 10:32:37 am »
My cabinet consists of a Tekken Tag cabinet, P4 2.9GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 80GB HD, Arcade VGA card, IPAC 4, EMS Top Gun II, hopefully thats enough info on hardware for now.

It seems to lock up when playing the PC versions of House of the Dead, 2 and 3. I've been able to play 1 for a little while, but the other day it locked up on me too. I've played Police Trainer on MAME for a few hours sometimes without any issue, but the last few days it has locked up on me twice, it's just intermittent. I've been able to play these games just fine on my regular PC.

Any ideas?

More info:

I just got Area 51 in the mail today (pc version) and played it through the first board, but when I got partially into the second board the screen goes black and sound disappears, I can't do anything, but restart the computer. Now that I think about it, this is what happens every time. I have to press and hold power button to get it to shutdown and turn back on (ctrl alt del) does not work.

Could this be an issue with the Arcade VGA card? Do I have to change a setting to get it to work with normal PC games instead of MAME?

Maybe your video card is over heating?  Put a secondary case fan in the machine, see if it still h appends, maybe the kind that sits under the video card in a pci slot.  Also could be faulty ram.  Check all temps, then Motherboard.  I would check all these in that order, if you have already tried software fixes, like latest drivers and so forth.

Has anyone else had these issues with an ArcadeVGA card?

I've installed 2 huge fans, both pointed right at the video card, so I know it's not overheating. I checked MB and CPU temps, the CPU sits right around 115F and the MB around 71F, so they don't seem to be the issue. It could still be ram, however since HOTD3 kept locking up on me, I decided to try HOTD2, it locked up during the intro movie, then switched back to windows with the following error.

VPU Recover
VPU has reset your graphics accelerator as it was no longer responding to graphics driver commands.

Please tell ATI about this problem

It then gives me the option to send or not send the error. I can't send due to it not being connected to the internet. This leads me to believe that it's a video card problem. With this new info, any suggestions? I've emailed Andy at Ultimarc, but haven't heard back.

The Heatsink looks weak on the ArcadeVGa but I have never had any problems, I am sury Andy would help you out if you just bought it, if its older, you may be out of luck.

Have you tried a ram tester application, like this?
http://www.memtest86.com and let it run in few hours.

Look like it might been a ram problem if it happens on all games? Some times I do have seen it could been a USB PCI problem, if you use such a card.

When I received my ArcadeVGA card, the heatsink was tweaked a little. I was able to push it back on, but that might have been causing my issues. I've contacted Ultimarc and they have agreed to send a replacement card.

I'll post my findings.
