mame probs

ive installed latest mame and installed latest dx and video drivers for onboard gfx (till its set up and i put my  avg  in.

when i run mame (cmd line ver) i get the txt of the rom nothing but a white box , no readable txt, some games just look crap (ive adjusted res to low) and some (eg gradius 4) are slow and sound stutters.

and the screen doesnt update quick and  sometimes doesnt go full screen ans gives me quarted screen (golden axe dual)

what am i doing wrong.
pc is asus p4s 533mx
soundblaster
p4 2.8 cpu ht
512mb ddr2

any help appreciate , ive searched forum cant find answer. ready to give up

come on guys, surely some tech head knows what i am doing wrong? this is my only stumbling block that is holding me up.
