XP Or VISTA For Cab?
« on: June 15, 2008, 05:41:42 am »
Whats the best OS to use for a MAME cab?, not sure if the over blown features of VISTA would be better for a Cab, and if maybe should stick to the more simplistic XP?

At this point in time , i would say XP is better.

May be in 2 or 3 years... Vista will be good choice.

Couldn't agree more.  I was running Vista for a while on my cab, and then it went down, hard.   I spent a week trying to get it back up and finally had to resort to backup up all my cab data, formatting the drive (twice mind you) and installing XP back on it.

Never again.

The biggest problem I found with XP is that some emulators don't run on it. For now, as everyone else has said, XP is the way to go.

I am setting up a cabinet right now using xp64, I want the performance gains in mame.  I will post back how it goes.  So far its great, still haven't installed my arcadevga yet though.

I spoke to Andy recently and he was working on 64-bit drivers for the Arcade VGA. So sounds like they are in the works.

XP 64 runs Mame64 great. I recommend a Dual Core 45nm CPU overclocked and you will be running Mame the best you possibly can at the moment. Currently there are no great performance gains from running Quad cores but that might change in the future.

I saw someone post some vista64 bit driveres for the arcadevga on this forum somewhere, not sure if they were beta or what not, but these may work on xp64 as well, I am going to give them a shot.  I hope they officially release the 64bit xp drivers on the utlimarc site though.  That would be really nice.

I have no personal experience using XP64 but I had heard that there was a lack of drivers for it.    Can people that are using it chime in on their experience.

To me it would be the best of both worlds.  The stability of XP with the performance gains of a 64bit OS.
