Dreamcast analog sticks to 49 way?
« on: July 25, 2008, 09:07:25 am »
Has anyone managed to wire up 49 way joysticks to a Dreamcast analog stick?  I'm planning on replacing my original Gauntlet Legends PCB set and dropping a Dreamcast into my cab.  I'd like to use the Happ/Midway 49 way joysticks with it, especially since I recently bought 2 new ones to replace the worn ones.

I bought my first Dreamcast this week for $15, but it didn't come with Gauntlet Legends.  I haven't even had time to mess with the console yet, and I'm just assuming that Gauntlet uses the analog stick because the arcade version does.  I've seen this schematic for interfacing a 49 way to a Hall effect joystick: http://www.arcadecollecting.com/info/49way_to_Hall.gif but it looks pretty complex for me to build, and I'd need 4 of them.

Has anyone even done this with a Dreamcast?  Could someone with a Dreamcast and Gauntlet Legends let me know if it can be played with the D-pad, and if it's any good?  My ultimate plan was to have a switchable setup with MAME and Dreamcast, but I'm not sure if the 49 ways are going to throw a wrench into the works.

Thanks!

I have my happ super hooked to a dreamcast controllers pcb on a switch where I can switch it from analog and digital but they both work as digital only.

I don't think a 49-way will get it becuase a dc does not have analog pot they have hall effect sensors.

but gauntlet does play 100% fine on my rig no need for true analog on it either.

The official Dreamcast controller can be connected with true analog 0-5v.  I have hooked up mine to my Ultimate 360's raw analog and verified true analog function (including sensitivity.) by playing some analog stick games.  If the 49-way can work as an true analog joystick and not just a matrix, you should be able to rig it up to the DC controller.  You have to do a little electronics wizardry if the 49-way is not 0-5V, though.  Is it?  :dunno  I am not saying this is impossible if the 49-way does not have plain analog outputs, I am just speculating that it may be more work than it is worth to convert a matrix based output to something you can connect to the DC.

According to this web site, the Happ49's I have are 5v:

Would it be possible for you to go into more detail on how I could go about wiring the 49 way to the DC?  I was beginning to think I was out of luck, but you've given me hope!  I've got a couple extra 49 ways to mess with so I won't need to risk hurting the ones in my cabinet until I get it figured out.  I only have one 'offical' Sony controller for the DC, but I should be able to pick more up cheap.

Thanks!

Tom

The 5V is the supply voltage. I did not see this in your first post the first time I read this thread:
http://www.arcadecollecting.com/info/49way_to_Hall.gif
You will need to build it in order to get a stepped 0-5V output.

Darn.  I've never built something like that.  So much for an easy solution.

I just lucked into a second dreamcast, 2 controllers and 8 games for free off craigslist.  I've now got 4 controllers, although 1 is Sony, 1 is Madcats and 2 are Quantum.

How about wiring the 49 ways to the digital pad?  It may not be analog, but if it would get it working it'd be a start.

Are you using an adapter to operate the sony controllers with the dreamcast, or
are you assuming that the dreamcast was made by sony?

Anyway, it's probably possible to connect the 49-way's to a digital pad,
but that would just be negating any benefit a 49 way would provide.

Sorry, I meant Sega not Sony.  Shows you how much I know about consoles!
