How to colour Space Invaders?
« on: August 26, 2008, 08:37:06 am »
This is perhaps the most rubbish question I've ever posted anywhere ever, but anyway here goes.

Back in the day, as I've no doubt you're all aware, the original Space Invaders cabs had coloured overlays stuck to the screen. The top was purple and the bottom was green. Is there any way of emulating that in MAME?

See, told you it was a cr@p question!!! :)

Cheers guys
Jon

Yes, stick coloured Overlays on the screen starting from purple at the top and green at the bottom.

Looks authentic too

iirc there was a rom in the set I was using before I dismantled the PC running it that had the overlays already in it or something like that.  Could I have been wrong?

This has probably been done already using overlays, I don't know much about them but I know you could possibly do this using a bezel as they support alpha faded images over the display, so you could color sections of the screen then alpha fade the image so the game screen will show through and color it.

There is a good collection of bezels and overlays you can look at on Mr Do's site

Go to the site Headkaze listed. Grab the invaders.zip and drop it in the Artwork folder. Run space invaders. Hit tab to bring up the menu. Go to video options. Select Cabaret Artwork and make sure Overlays are enabled. You should then see the colored screen....
