Grrrr... how do I disable Ctrl+Alt stuff?
« on: May 10, 2008, 03:29:58 am »
I just figured out why mame keeps turning my computer screen wacky sideways.  If you push Ctrl+Alt+arrow keys, it will turn your screen at all sorts of annoying angles.   :angry: So, seeing as mame uses ctrl, alt and space and arrow keys all the time...  :timebomb: How the heck do I turn this Ctrl+Alt+arrow nonsense off?  ???

Sounds like your video card driver came with an applet that has quick keys / macro's defined to do this. Both ATI and NVIDIA based cards ship with a utility that runs in the background. These applications are not needed for drivers to work. Look by the clock there will be a red and white diamond shaped thing for ATI or a green squiggly thing for NVIDIA.  Try right clicking and see if you can disable it there.

If not you can always stop the application from starting with Windows via the registry.

Here's how you stop it in the registry (example is the structure in XP since its the most common OS)

Start --> Run --> Regedit

Expand the tree as follows

  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
        SOFTWARE
             WINDOWS
                 CURRENT VERSION
                     RUN

Locate the key for your NVIDIA or ATI panel application and delete it. Restart your PC and its gone. Video drivers will still work, but quick keys, etc wont.

Thanks!  That worked.  I had an icon that looked like a monitor (Intel Extreme Graphics).  I was able to disable hot keys from there.  Man am I glad thats fixed!  It was crazy trying to play.

My other comp didn't have that problem, this is the new one I got for a mame machine.

Thanks again!

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

I remapped my Minipac to have no function keys used whatsoever. Then I went in and re-setup the keys in all of my emulators. Extra work, sure, but I've avoided conflicts like yours ever since.
