B/W monitor, replace with a B/W TV ?
« on: April 09, 2008, 04:36:40 pm »
Since I've replaced two color arcade monitors with TV's I was wondering how hard it would be to use an old B/W TV-set as a monitor for an old B/W game.

Would it be easy f.i. to replace only the CRT (From the TV to the monitor chassis) ? Do I have to think of yoke impedance, CRT angles ?

A TV has a tuner an intermediate Frequency section (IF) in some case can be done but not easy.

It is probably easier to replace with a color monitor.... tie the red, green and blue signal inputs together and connect the signal wire from the B/W game.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Rick,

Yeah I'm aware about the tuner. I remember that I used to have a portable B/W tv (only thing I could afford) for my Atari 600XL and some friend hacked in a video signal input to bypass the tuner.

And the using a color CRT......it's not the same thing...

A real B/W CRT has a higher resolution, and the phospor "color" is always a lot different from a color CRT running a B/W signal. Also think about convergence....Yes I am that anal about it sorry :D

Been a while since I tried this but generally as all 3 colors rae on- convergence should have no play. Try it I don't think resolution will be an issue either as the color tube will have as approvx DPI of about  .8 to .9 mm
