Why do some of my roms not show up in mame?

I've recently noticed that there are quite a few roms that I put in the roms directory and are a .zip file that are now showing up in my list. I have refreshed the list over and over, but they are still gone.

Does this mean that I am doing something wrong or the rom is bad or that rom doesn't work with mame?

Are they the wrong versions for your MAME? Are they working in MAME? Check MAWS.
