NES Screenshots for everyone
« on: May 23, 2003, 06:45:47 am »
After spending ages searching the web looking for screenshots to use with my console emulators I decided to bite the bullet and and just make my own.
Anyway, I have made screenshots for 581 NES games with 2 screenshots for each game - the start screen and an in game shot.  If anyone wants to download them, I have made them available in a single zip file here:
h**p://console.photosfor.us/index.htm - This site will no longer be updated.

New site now here: http://members.lycos.co.uk/stuzza12/

I understand the names will probably differ to the roms some of you may have (I wish there was a decent standard for these like there is in MAME!), but hey at least it's easier renaming them, than having to create them all yourself!

Cheers,

Stuzza

You should choose some sort of naming convention based off of the GoodTools.  Those are standard names that are followed quite well.

great job! more people need to contribute these, maybe we could get a complete set. I have quite a few I wouldn't mind contributing if you have the space for it..

Seems web1000 hosting is giving some people some problems.  Does anyone know of any other good free web site hosting? (web1000 has 50MB free space which is pretty good)

I'd be happy to upload the site to a different host for those of you experiencing problems.

I'll also check out that good Tools program to see about the naming conventions.  The reason I have done it my way was to get all my nes screenshots to use with Emucon!

Thanks for the replies.

For everyone running non mame emulators ie Gens/nintendo etc , I think all snapshots should be in the Goodtools nameing convention.Ive started doing some Gens but are only up to C.
Who thinks its possible to organise combined effort to work on proper named console game snapshots?
I know others have started before but i don't think they ever finished?
There would have to be a common snap shot file size ,type, dimensions , extention I think so everyone is pulling in the same direction. Also someone has to combine the contributions and host them.

Thumpa,

Sounds like a great idea.  I should be receiving a full set of NES & SNES roms in a week or two and would gladly be involved in a group effort to get a proper database of screenshots going using the GoodTools naming convention.

If such a project was done, would people require a screenshot for every version of a single game?  e.g. one for each of:
10-Yard Fight (J) [o1]
10-Yard Fight (J) [o2]
10-Yard Fight (J) [p1][o3]
10-Yard Fight (J)
10-Yard Fight (U) [b1]
10-Yard Fight (U) [o1]
10-Yard Fight (U)

or just one of these?  Just a thought...

i'd be happy to help, but, i don't have ANY console roms at the moment.

as for hosting, i can stick em on my server (i've had 500Mb web space for around 8 months, but i havn't really done anything with it yet ::) )

maybe i should start (yet another) emulation/arcade cab site...?

 :P

yes thats the problem.
Im only using roms with a (U) USA (E) Europe or [!] good rom.

Theres not much point running 7 slightly versions of the same game especially those silly jap ones.Ive got about 500 to do, but it will take a little time.Still ,some snapshots are better than none at all.And u still can make your own of the ones that get missed.

er, as far as i know, there aren't any emu's that are capable of showing screenshots...
...the files above are for frontends...i think nearly every frondend is capable of displaying them...

The screenshots in the zip file were named as:
"filename_01.png" -  start screen of game
"filename_02.png" -  in game screenshot
This was done specificially to work with the Frontend Emucon.(http://www.mameworld.net/emuloader/downloads.htm)  This just happens to be the frontend I prefer, due mainly to the fact it supports a bunch of console emulators, allowing me to run my NES, SNES and Gameboy games all from the one list.

Just a thought on the nameing convention. But what about using a batch file to rename the files? Wel.. This is a little harder to explain then I had originally thought.

Have a text file with the rom names minus the ext. Have a list of image filenames that correspond to the rom. Like so:

rename 10_yard_fight_01.png 10yardfight(!)(U).png
rename 1942_01.png 1942(!)(U).png
reanme 1943_01.png 1943(U)(#).png
rename 720_01.png  720(J)(!).png
(Note the goodtools codes are all wrong and are Just for example)

etc..

The amount of typing could be shortened by using a dos window to copy and past the filenames.  And you can use notepads Find and Replace feature to replace the .nes ext.

I'm sure I could just code something in Visual basic .Net/C# to do this also. But if I do it everyone who uses it will need to have the .NET framework installed. :(

Ok, I now also have 987 Gameboy Advance Screenshots - named with the GoodTools standard.  Howevever the zip file is quite large, 24MB and I need somewhere to upload?

Seems like a lot of people out there have the screenshots, just nowhere to up em to.  If someone out there is able to host all of these files can they get in touch.

Are your zip files of Genesis, Snes, and N64 files available for download somewhere?  If so, what is the link or website?  Or if not, I hope someone will host these files real soon as I would really like to have them!!

Unfortunately, I am new to MAME and computer emulators, therefore as I have found, you are label a "dumbass".  I am unsure of what ftp is for one thing and I tried all the links in the thread above to no avail, including the demonseed.no-ip.com
ArcadeControls/snaps
21  site that was mentioned above.  Maybe I am really missing something obvious, but can you simply provide a hotlink to the site where the zip files are located.
Thanks and sorry for the "dumb" questions.

Hey stuzza,

what GBA emulator do u use?.
and is it o/k with an arcade monitor and a FE like mamewah?
Just wondering if its worth adding to my MAME box.
Cheers

As Radiator stated, the one and only good Gameboy emulator, in my opinion is Visualboy Advance.  I run this via the Emucon Front End, which I also use for my NES and SNES titles.  As for arcade monitor compatability, I wouldn't know, as I use a standard 19" computer monitor in my cabinet.

radiator - try the visual boy advance SDL version.  it takes a little tweaking, but allows you to get rid of the menu bar.

Hey Demon-Seed,

I was able to log in to your FTP site and see the files there, including one called "Full Access Read Me.txt" but the account you provided us with does not have RETR permission.

Thus, we are unable to read the read me, or download the files.

Are you just taunting us? =)

So i'm still a little unclear about the naming conventions that you guys are using for these screenshots...will they match TOSEC or GoodTools names or what?  Or are people renaming them all individually?

I have a utility for this (renaming) that works fairly well.  I need beta testers.  (Hint Hint)

Here is the beta to my generic artwork renamer.....

http://www.oscarcontrols.com/lazarus/files/generic_artwork_renamer.zip

It uses some fuzzy logic to guess at the game the image goes with, but for emus like nes emus it should be a 100% match....

Nes emus taken the name of the rom and add crap to the end such as "romname_000.jpg" right?  Well all you do with my renamer is in one of the "remove this from text if found" slots type in "_000" and it will copy and rename all of your snaps to the new folder you specify and remove the _000.  That is assuming you point to a rom path that actually has the roms for the snaps in it.

It is also designed so that you keep the orignals and the renamed versions are copies, put in a seperate folder.  That way there isn't any risk in trying it and if you download new roms you can run it again and convert more art.

You know those ones in which the title is _0 and the snap is _1 ?  Do the same deal except run it twice....  the first time put _0 in the remove box and point the destination folder to "titles" and it will only match up those that it removes "_0" from. Then run it a second time replacing the "_0" with "_1" and call the folder "snapshots"  Poof! They are sorted!

This is beta and isn't user friendly at all... those who have already contacted me to beta test please try this and keep in contact with me.  For the rest of you feel free to try it, but it's not supported yet so don't bug me about it. ;)

Hey howard nice work i'll try your program and keep you posted! I had a quick question for you though. Demon-seed gens snaps i have downloaded and when i rename them foir my front end game launcher thee icon on the side of the text shows up but some of the snaps don't come up. I noticed that alot of his snaps are 60-75kb and those are not the ones coming up. Is this a normal for a front end? does it keep it from displaying to large of images in order to not slow down performance?

For gamelauncher it is, for other fes it's not.

Snaps really should be bigger than 256 by 256.  What size (dimension wise) are these snaps?

Howard , generic renamer kicks butt! i just have one question though in order for my pics to show i have to have the .smd or .bin in the pictures name is there any way to automate adding this to the renamer. Because as of right not it pulls it out and jst uses everything before the "."  Well i can go through each onbe and add it i was just curious before i do it if you have an idea of how i could do this. Because sometimew this front end does not except roms zipped....

works great though

Excellent work on the Renamer Howard!

For anyone who is having troubles renaming their snaps, I found this neet little program called Oscars Renamer very helpful:
http://www.mediachance.com/free/renamer.htm

It enables all files in a directory to be loaded into a text editor type mode, where you can then do simple edit and replace all.  I used it to replace the _ and _01, _02 from my snaps, before loading them into Howard's renamer and it worked quite well - although I'm still playing with it...

** New Screenshots available! **

After receiving my full set of NES roms in the mail, I've decided to do things properly as far as creating NES shots. - This way everyone will be happy :)

I have now started creating shots using the correct GoodTools names.  I am doing them country by country (ie. I used GoodTools to move the roms to sorted directories).

For starters, here are the Australia, Europe and World shots:

http://members.lycos.co.uk/stuzza12/nes.htm

If anyone is interested in helping create these, please send me an email or pm me.

For gamelauncher it is, for other fes it's not.

GL should display screen shots regardless of size.  This is the first I've heard of any issue.  I'll have to take a look in a week or so, as I'm in the middle of a move and my main GL testing machine is dismantled.

Yup, 16-bit is just dandy.  AFAIK any PNG should work.

Dave, back in the day I ran into some issues with gl like this other poster did.  I didn't know specificaly what the problem was, but I resaved the files and they were ok.  I don't blame gamelauncher, but the library that it uses to read png files.  Some are picker than others.  I should know, in lazarus I used the paint x dll, which didn't like about 10 or 12 of the official mame snapshots. Allegro is also bad about this at times.

My suggestion, resave in another program.

Hmm, a corrupt PNG or bug in the PNG library would cause this behavior.  This is just the first I've heard of any issues regarding PNGs.  C'mon, Howard.  You should know that unless a problem gets reported, it won't get fixed. ;) GL uses libpng which is pretty much the de facto PNG library.  That said, the loadpng library has had a number of bugs in the past which I had to fix.  Can someone email me a PNG which exhibits this behavior?  I'll take a look later this week or next week.

That's worth a shot.  Maybe try ImageMagick as they have a command line utility called "convert".   If it works you could batch convert all the problem images.  Even if this does work, I'd like to get a copy of a PNG that exhibits this issue so I could test it out for myself.
