Tempest CPO Install
« on: February 08, 2008, 02:22:50 pm »
Man,  Atari CPO's are a ---smurfette--- to remove... I think I am still high from the Carb Cleaner fumes.  After about 3-4 hours of dirty nasty-ass work....this is the result...

In the photos there's color differences. Maybe these don't exist in real life... Did the camera color-correct the photos?

The CPO is the last piece of art I need to replace on my Tempest.  I was holding off, but looking at a fresh one makes me want to order one NOW!

Depends who made the repro... I've seen a couple that are washed out in person too.  Not much but enough that if you see a NOS and a repro side by side it is clear.  I can't remember whose repros were the washed out ones.

The CPO and marquee were purchased by a reputable collector that claims they are "NOS".   The marquee had the Atari serial number,  the CPO doesn't have one (neither did the original I pulled off).   There's no reason for me to believe these are anything but NOS,  but even if they are repro,  I couldn't care less as I got them for less than arcadeshop wants for their repro's.

And arcadeshop's quality isn't all that terrific either, judging by the Galaxian CPO they sent me (which I cut to pieces)....

There's color differences on my Centipede CPO, but that's an inkjet repro from a file we all know the source of, so I don't blame Mamemarquees for that. However, those colors are wrong, I don't think that is NOS.

But the bottom line is, are YOU happy with it. Nothing else matters :D

For what it's worth, just wanted to add that even repros often include serial numbers and copyright notices.

I've complained about the current Tempest marquee repros on other forums.  All the repros I've ever seen are the same.  the center image is too dark.  The difference is night and day, and if it's dark it's not NOS.  I've heard that some think the originals are lighter due to age and exposure to light, but I disagree.  Take a look at the two pictures below and decide.

Did your repro have the black text on white background serial number on the edge of the marquee (that gets folded back)?

Printing is a real art. It's really difficult to match what you see on a screen to inks on paper (even different inks will produce different results). So hobbyists making repros aren't necessarily print press experts. There's going to be problems if they don't bother doing test prints and tweaking tweaking tweaking.

Here is a link to the picture of the repro on the Arcadeshop website.  All of them I've seen have had the serial number on them.
