Mame roms being removed?
« on: February 14, 2008, 11:04:44 pm »

I heard a rumor last week that Mame Developers
have started to removed support for certain roms.
I heard that a couple big companies like Nintendo were
forcing Mame developers to remove support.

Can anyone confirm this? If So what Version did it start?
I have version 121 right now but If I there are roms
removed from 122, and 123 I'll just lock it in at 121.

Any info would be appreciated...

I don't see how thats possible. There is nothing illegal about emulation.

With the revival of classics on Xbox Arcade, Wii and PS3 it's possible that the big companies are taking action against emulation. Most Mame users don't have licenses for the games they have and the Mame drivers make it possible to play them. It too simplistic to leave it at "emulation isn't illegal". Look at what happened to Wine, the Windows emulator for Linux.
Wish list: Galaga, Pacman, Pooyan, Star Wars cockpit, Gauntlet, Tron

And the Lord spake, saying, 'First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then, shalt thou count to three. No more. No less. Three shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, nor either count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three.

Yea if they are simply removing support for roms that are already supported, its just a minor inconvience. Just run two versions of mame. Big deal.

There have been no recent requests (in the last 1-2 years) for removal of any drivers.  The only requests we've had are

1) Don't support Tetris Grandmaster 2 (Arika)
2) Don't support newer Cave shooters (DDP3 and newer)
3) Don't support 'Rapid Fire' from Hanaho.

Requests are acknowledged and acted upon, as stated there is nothing Illegal about the emulation of the hardware in MAME, but if somebody makes a direct request to us then it's only polite for us to take it into consideration.

Ahh I see so if I just joined in at 121 I wouldn't notice
a difference anyway.

Thanks for clearing that up!
