Front-end for NES, SNES, Genesis, etc.
« on: December 04, 2007, 10:18:26 am »
Are there Front-ends for these emulators? I am looking for something similar to MaLa.

I have an Arcade Monitor so I would definitly need one vs. running the emulators in windows, which looks horrible.

Also, does anyone know what the best resolution would be for NES, SNES, and Genesis?? I can add them via PowerStrip.

Mala is pretty similar to Mala.  Any reason you can't use it?

Yes, there is an "Other Emu" tab in the MALA options window which let you configure as many other emulators as you want.

History:
I believe Mala was initially created just as a frontend for MAME only, but was then expanded /upgraded to allow the user to configure multiple emulators.   This is why MALA has a specific "Mame" section and has a separate "Other Emu" section as well.   I believe the author (Swindus) wanted to keep all the Mame configuration stuff the same (untouched) so he simply added a new tab called "Other Emu" when he upgraded the application

Anyway, I think you should read this:

I have been using the front end Maximus Arcade. It is pretty versatile and can run like 18 different emulators.

It's a little of self-promotion but...

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=74073.0

There is my frontend (at the bottom the last version). I use it with MAME and NES, SNES, Genesis. Is in spanish by default but includes optional translation to english (and other if you doit yourself).

Hope you like it, or just try it and giveme some feedback

I just recently set up MALA to run my console emulators. The only one I have trouble with is Project 64. I'm running Stella, Nestopia, Virtualboy, Znes, and Fusion with no problems.

I would have to go load again to get the exact problem...but it says something like "can't load rom". If I close that box, I can manually load it.

I'll try to get more accurrate info later tonight.

I second the Maximus Arcade vote.  That's what I use.  The interface is slick and VERY VERY user friendly when it comes to setting up emulators.    It's not too popular here on BYOAC because you have to pay for it.  $25 to register.  But you can use it for a full 30 days to evaluate it.  The demo is FULLY functional.

I love it.

Ok...just checked Project 64 in MALA again. When I try to open a game...it says "Attempt to open file failed"

I'm running version 1.6 of P64 and the newest version of MALA (1.04 I think).

If I X out of the error box, the console stays open and I can run games...I just can't open them from MALA.

I just can't open them from MALA.

I would check the three things circled below. Obviously your rom path will be different than mine, but make sure it is pointing to the folder where your n64 roms are.  I would then refresh the main game list (right-click menu).

If I was a betting man, I would guess that you do not have the quotes around the command line.  The Mala PJ64 preset doesn't have quotes which causes a problem if your rom names have spaces in them or your folder names have spaces.

Can you start a Project64 ROM outside of MALA by issuing the command in the command line window?  Basically, do not use MALA at all and see if the game starts up automatically by issuing the correct command line command in a command window.  Make sure the game starts automatically instead of having the Project64 menu being displayed and selecting a game (ie: do not want to see the menu .... just the game start)

My MALA Project64 (v1.6) does not have the quotes in them and my ROM files have space in them and it works fine.

Yikes!  Sorry about that.  I have v1.7.0.49.  It's been months since I set that up.  I'll test to see if I actually have to have them in my version.  I did some assuming that got me in trouble.  :banghead:

EDIT:
I'm not crazy after all.  If I remove the quotes, my version of PJ64 will NOT work with any roms with spaces.

Got it going guys! Thanks!

I went and checked the settings mentioned. Mine had the quotes as default...I deleted them and voila!

MALA now handles all my emulators flawlessly...

Thanks again!

I went back through the change logs and found where the change to the command line regarding quotes occurred way back with version   1.7.0.25.  The last released version is 1.7.0.49.  Glad you got it going.   :applaud:
