Another case where other people ruin things for everyone. The thing is, it's hard to tell what kind of person is buying this stuff just by the looks of them, most times.

You didn't read the entire article. The fault is not with meth users.

I remember trying to buy claritin-D for the wife back when they started requiring you to sign a paper and show your driver's license. That was crap.

Still, here in WV meth is a HUGE problem. I don't know about other areas of the country, but meth is definitely the redneck drug of choice. Before the law, you couldn't usually buy the stuff anyways because it was stolen off the shelves as soon as it got there. Most businesses were already keeping it behind lock and key, and were only keeping like 2 packs in stock at any one time on top of that. It is quite normal to notice "meth teeth" on workers at convenience stores and McDonalds around here. Meth house busts are quite common, as are mobile meth units.

I wrote part of the app that my employer uses to track buyers of these products.  These are federal laws, IIRC.  Implementation specifics are left to each state but the requirements are an act of Congress.

Utterly ridiculous.

It's about time that all recreational drugs were legalised for adult use. If people want to risk damaging their health by taking drugs then that's their business.

And the prescription system should be scrapped as well. All medicinal drugs should be available over the counter to anyone over 18.

BTW, these laws have been around for years now.  I used to order pure ephedrine by the bottle back when I was lifting every night... that was probably 2000-2001.  I had to send the company copies of my driver's license and social security card for their files.  The only thing that is different now is that the B+_M implementation grace periods have all expired so it "suddenly" applies to various other forms like pseudo-ephedrine.

(For a while the "cutting cocktail" of choice for many lifters was ephedrine/caffeine/aspirin.  I wasn't running a meth lab and this was before it was known to be as dangerous as it is now considered.)

That'd be a fine opinion if I didn't have to help pay for their medical bills after they eff themselves up...I say we legalize all those drugs...then make sure they will kill...rather than mame.

P.S. - I have to keep my mobile meth lab on the move...everyone else's meth habit supports my arcade habit.

The solution to reducing red-neck meth use is to reduce the amount of red-necks.

That's the catch with meth that really set this off. Meth making is very dangerous, and is usually done by amateurs. About a year ago, cops busted a dude sleeping in his car parked at a gas station. His car also happened to be a full blown meth lab. Houses that are meth labs are ticking time bombs in residential areas. Every single bust I have seen on tv has also included the fact that the parents 2-4 kids who were  living in said meth lab are going to now going to be state wards.

Heh, maybe the government should do what the record companies did to napster - pollute the market with tainted materials. ;)

You could always get a prescription for the same stuff and avoid the OTC aspects of the law.  They all have near equivalents that can be had on the usual 30 day supply renewing Rx.

Well even if legalisation of drugs did lead to increased costs for the taxpayer, that’s a price I would be more than willing to pay in order to live in a free society.

But I think you’re wrong for two reasons.

Firstly, you haven’t factored in the prohibitive law enforcement costs of fighting an unwinnable “war against drugs”TM.

Secondly, I’m not persuaded that legalising drugs actually leads to more health problems for addicts. A lot of the health problems are actually caused by addicts using dirty needles, and drugs that have been cut with other substances. Those problems would be greatly reduced if they could obtain their drugs through legal channels.

Maybe you should try buying some medication outside of your allergy season.

do you mind paying taxes full stop, so that others can get healthcare?
if you wont pay for peoples ill health through drug use, are you happy to pay for people who have heart issues cos they eat too much red meat? because theres no difference is there , they've just both over indulged.
should we strip every finite detail of a persons life to find reasons not to treat them.
and i assume you include people who drink ever, cos theres no need for alcohol its a pure indulgence, so if people drink at all we shouldnt give them healthcare. yes?

He's not arguing over who gets treated, he's arguing over who has to pay for their treatment.

Eating isn't as destructive as using drugs, but alas, that isn't going to stop asinine analogies. ::)

Yes, meth is not something to think lightly about, it makes formerly good people into soul-snatched misfits whom steal things from people they used to love, like their family, and I mean anything...like family heirlooms, wedding rings, priceless things - just to get their next fix. It really rewires their brain. Trying to get them back is like trying to unring a bell. Damn near impossible. Once they are hooked, in many ways, it's as if the person you once knew died and was replaced by a careless robot searching for their next fix at any cost.
