Albums of the year

Because I'm horribly curious,  as we near the end of the year, I'd like to get your thoughts on album of the year for 2007.  Given time, I may try and create a poll later based on some of the responses to make it a little easier to cast one's vote.

My rules:  It can be any genre of music, but must have been released between December 1, 2006 and December 31, 2007.  Yeah, that's a little over a year, but who cares.

I'll throw out two myself to start things:

Kelly Willis - Translated From Love: after two albums of some of the most god awful ballads known to man, the girl has returned to EXCELLENT form. Period. If you've never heard her and can't find a copy of "Well Travelled Love" or "Bang Bang", THIS is the Willis album to start with.

Aimee Mann - Another Drifter In The Snow: Who KNEW the former lead singer of 'Til Tuesday could pull off a Christmas album?  Not me - yet it contains marvelous tracks, the highlight of which HAS to be her cover of "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch." Perfection and a brilliant display of how to do a cover.  So good it should be used in music classes for just that purpose, and a crying shame they didn't tag her to do the movie version.   "I'll Be Home For Christmas" is also a great one.

I prefer classic rock, which is why I enjoyed Tesla's new album Real to Reel which was made up of modern versions of classic songs from the 60's and 70's.

A year ago I'd have been all over this, but I dropped out of the music scene over the past year.  I've just been too damned busy.  Add to that the demise of AllofMP3 and I just haven't kept up.  We got a new Modest Mouse album, which was really good, but not as great as their previous effort.  I'll say Radiohead - In Rainbows, even though I've yet to listen to it, just because of the novelty of releasing it on a pay-however-much-you'd-like basis.  And the critics all say it's a rather great Radiohead album, so I'm sure it's at least decent.

Last year, though, Yeah Yeah Yeah's gave us Show Your Bones, which I think is the most brilliant album to come from anywhere since The Strokes released Is This It?

Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
The Historic Conquests Of.. - Josh Ritter
Easy Tiger - Ryan Adams
Icky Thump - White stripes

All in all a good year for music...
