I'm a big fan of the Coen brothers and have been looking forward to seeing this for a long time.  I can't wait for it to come to a local theater.

Well I saw it earlier tonight, and unfortunately I have to give it a thumbs down.

*Warning: some spoilers*

The majority of the movie was brilliant, but that was probably the most anti-climatic ending I've ever seen in a movie.  It reminded me of Monty Python and the Holy Grail in that it seemed like they ran out of money, so they decided to rap it up real quick.  I'm sure thats not what actually happened, but I was really let down by the last 15-20 minutes.  The entire movie is basically one big buildup to a confrontation between the main characters, and then it just skips it and shows the outcome.  I felt like a reel was missing from the film.  It's really a shame because the rest of the movie was brilliant.

Are there other people out there who didn't think Fargo was all that good? I bought it on dvd a few years ago after hearing how good it was supposed to be, and was very disappointed.

That is the main reason I won't be seeing this one... Well maybe as a rental.

"The majority of the movie was brilliant".........."Thumbs down".
A movie is only as good as its ending.  When the movie seems to be building up to a final showdown that never occurs onscreen, it can ruin the whole thing.  I left the movie feeling extremely unsatisfied and wondering why they blew the ending instead of thinking about how good the rest of the movie was.  Also, while I often enjoy movies that others don't, this was the first movie in a long time that I went to where once it ended I could hear everyone else in the audience going "That's it?  Thats the end?" and a few guys even starting yelling "That sucked!"

Biggest disappointment of the year by far.

I myself don't usually like movies that stick to a formula. Except "Road Trip" style movies :)

The final showdown can be seen in 99% of "action" movies if that's what makes you happy.  I love that it took an unexpected turn.  You are right, it wasn't very satisfying in the normal sense of the word but I found it refreshing nevertheless.

I remember seeing Pulp Fiction in the theater and people we complaining afterwards that they thought the movie was spliced together wrong or something.  It really did confuse people.  Now it's considered a turning point in modern cinema.  I like when film makers try something different and not just for the sake of being different.  Take my masturbation video for instance....:)

Well I have a feeling (or at least I hope) that it will never become the norm to have an extremely suspenseful movie with no climax and instead just peters out in the end.

*warning specific spoilers*

And the fact that they don't show the final showdown, but they do show the bad guy getting hit with a car.  There was no point to that scene, we learn nothing new about the character, it was a completely random event and it had zero effect on the story.  It was as if they knew the ending was so unsatisfying that they tried to throw out a small bone to make up for it, but the problem is there was no meat on the bone.  You could say it just shows how life is random like the flip of a coin toss, but thats just dumb.

And honestly, I felt like they did do something different just for the sake of being different.

My mother in law is in town and my wife and I were REALLY excited to see this, but it turns out that we've just got no money to go to the theater.  It's a damned shame, cos it's not often that we have any opportunity to go out without the baby, especially since we moved to Miami.  C'est la vie.  Might have to settle for rental (a painful proposition with any Coen Bros. movie).
