I Want MAME to Pause When I Press Escape

An older version of MAME that I use, when I pressed Escape, the Exit menu would come out, the one that says something like Press Select to Exit but it would also Pause MAME. I can't seem to do that with these newer versions of MAME. When I press escape, the Exit menu comes out but the game continues playing. I want it to pause and have the exit menu come out. Then if I press Escape again, I want it to continue as in remove the exit menu and unpause the game.

Unless I'm truly blind and can't find that option anywhere on MAME's settings. How can I do this?

use a keyboard and press tab then go under the general setting's and and remap the the keys to whatever you want.

Nope... the Escape/Exit menu isn't even remappable. 

What should i do?

That functionality is still there in MAMEPlus

yes, you can change it.  Its called UI Cancel.   Remap that first... then you can remap the pause to esc (just tried it... worked fine)

You're right it does work but it doesn't do the unpause thing. You have to press it like three times while the game starts agains and you have no control over it 

How can I make it so it pauses and brings out the exit menu when you press escape then unpauses and removes the exit menu when you press escape again? Two things at once?
