Hantrax Monitor Sparking , please help
« on: September 29, 2007, 12:15:16 pm »
I just bought a cab at an auction and when i got it home I switched it on and could hear a clicking or sparking noise but got no picture , I could hear the game in the background.
So I opened the back ( I've not got a clue about monitors ) and switched it on and there was a spark every half second or so , I just switched it off ,I did check the fuse ( only thing I knew how to do ) , I've circled where it is sparking , any ideas ,  :dunno
Help I'm useless !!!!

unless you have some electronics knowledge and good soldering skills don't attempt this as you will make it worse
your best bet is to buy the flyback yourself and get someone to fit it,either a local tv tech or as your in sunny ol scotland you must have a local arcade/operator who could help
when you get the flyback you will need certain info,i am guessing you have a polo 1  25-this means its a hantarex polo1 chassis operating on 25inch tube
you can find the info you need on the monitor chassis, you should see a label with something like polo 25 written on it
i know many different u.k stockists of the flyback transformer

Once you get around the issues of discharging the monitor (making sure you don't electrocute yourself), changing the flyback really isn't that difficult.  You'll need a good de-soldering iron; there are ~8 solder points so you need to get every bit of solder off before you try and pull the component off the board.

If you aren't comfortable doing it, however, it makes sense to have someone else do it.  You would certainly be messing with the "dangerous end" of the monitor.

thanks for the replies
I'm not bad at soldering so I think I would try it myself , is it likely that is all that would be wrong with the monitor ?
How much is it for the part & where would be a good place to get one ?
thanks again Craig

If the sparks are coming from somewhere on the flyback, it doesn't matter where the hole is.  The new flyback will replace the entire component, including the red wire.

bluevolume is correct,
best thing to do is open your cab observe the flyback from a short distance and get someone to switch the light off-then you will see the blue arc going from the plastic flyback body to the nearest metal point

;D That is pretty much exactly what I did for my monitor.  Probably serious overkill, but it made me more comfortable doing it.

Let one of the monitor guru's here reply before you do it though, I'm not an authority on monitors.

What does the screwdriver need to touch , is there different pins under there ,if so what one would I touch with the screwdriver , also how do you know when/if it is discharged ?

I'll not be rushing into anything just now ,no hero here ,trying to just get as much info as I can

Underneath the cap there is a wire bent into a "U" shape with pins sticking out on the ends.  This snaps into a hole that is fabricated into the tube.  You need to touch the screwdriver to that wire.  You should hear a nice "snap!" when you hit it, but not always.  On my WG monitor it somehow discharges itself, and I've never got a spark in the 10 or 15 times I've removed the anode.

most monitor made towards the end of the 80's have a discharge resistor on the ht to prevent too much charge remaining in the tube,i know from experience this to be the case with the hantarex polo range
as long as the monitor is not powered you should not get any more than a small spark.
not like on microvitec monitors, when you discharged them is was like a lightning storm :scared

Once I see a spark or hear a snap will that be it discharged ?
Is there anything I should do to check?

1-the flyback is soldered in to place, the pins go in a circle shape-these need to be desoldered correctly without damage to the track
2-there is an earth pin to the flyback that is set slightly off the circle of pins(at about 1 o'clock)-this MUST be desoldered
3-the flyback is also held in place by a screw at the top of the plastic body
4-you have three wire coming from the flyback-the ht anode cap that obviously goes to the tube, the focus line and the G2(screen volts) go to the neck card
5-the G2 is soldered into place and the focus wire pushes into place on the crt socket
6-sometimes the focus wire can be removed from the crt socket by just pulling BUT sometimes you need to unclip the retaining housing
7-the focus wire and G2 must go to the correct place
i would strongly suggest you get a local tv repair man to do this job as if you screw any of this up you are gonna need a lot more than a flyback
another option is to remove and send for repair to craig at giz10p, hantarex u.k,helpline or dhleisure-all u.k based and all excellent
please don't attempt this unless you have changed a flyback before
