maximus arcade??
« on: April 16, 2006, 11:17:56 pm »
Just wondering why I don't here much about the frontend "Maxiums Arcade"  I have been testing it out for about a month now and I think it is by far the best FE I have used.  Is it because you have to pay for it?  I know I didn't like the idea of paying for a FE before but I think this beats any FE out there.  I really like how you can use it for 30 days with no limitation.  Just wondering why I don't here much about it.

This has got to be a cheap "unsolicited testimonial" and not a real question.

The reason you don't hear about it is because it's nothing to look at visually (even mamewah can replicate it's simple skins easily), it only supports a limited number of emulators, apparently there isn't a skinner, and you have to pay for it.

When you pay for something it is supposed to be better than the free alternatives.  Not only that, but so much better that you are willing to pay the asking price rather than settle for the free ones.  Simply put, it isn't good enough to warrant it's price considering how good the free ones are.

Of course that's just my opinion.  But considering as you said, you never hear of it, I'd say it's the general consensus.

I didn't try Maximus.  I against the fact to have to pay for a simple FE.

the good point of this FE i think , is the documentation. It is the minimum we can ask for a paid sofware!.

I use it, and yes i paid for it, but i've used many others and this is better IMHO. Plus i seem to get decent support from the actual programmer unlike many other FEs out there. Just my 2 cents.

In term of support, i would be suprised their support will be better than the one i give for AtomicFe  or  MinWah 's support for MameWah.
And the GameEX support is very good too , i think.

Your support is great and like AtomicFE also.  However MA is much eaiser to setup and the menus are nicer than AtomicFE IMO.

I use it because I'm a graphics whore and I liked the built in opengl transitions. Its very simple to setup as well and is pretty idiot proof. It also does include a skin editor. I will make a skin in the future when I have time; but the current one is fine and does the job. It also has support for tons of emulators, but I guess its not enough for some people. It was either Maximus or GameEX that I was going to pay for and while GameEX was more featured and powerful; I just did not like the out of the box feel of it. If that makes sense.  :P

Yup I'm going with Maximus as well.  I tried all the free alternatives, and although they have the ability to customize everything, the amount of effort I had to put into it simply wasn't worth it.

Maximus took me 15 minutes to setup 9 emulators, I attempted to do the same with 4 free alternatives and finally gave up.

I'm sure you can make it look great with hours of effort, but my time is worth more than the $25 for a program that I can have doing what I want to do in a short period of time.

Just my two cents. (1.94 cents US, we're catching up!)

I paid for MA and am happy with it.  I enjoy the look, and found it easy to use so I went with it.

I feel that Maximus development is very slow compared to the free front ends.
User customization and layout manipulation is very limited.

If you want a front end that comes with a clean look out of the box and are not picky about features to make your front end unique, then it is fine.

I had very specific needs for my front end and I thoroughly enjoyed testing a slew of them.

I agree with Youki about support. Its pretty important if you are having issues to be able to get them resolved quickly.

I was blown away by the support from the these specific authors.

Swindus and Loadman (Mala)
Youki (Atomic)
Minwah (Mamewah)
Headkaze, Tom Speirs (GameEX)

Just my 2¢

PS. This is my sample WIP shot of my layout (MALA).
