Author Topic: How BYOAC.COM bummed me out... (Read 4298 times)

So, I have been following these forums for the past few years...Haven't needed to post much since you can find just about anything via searching. I have seen some SWEET arcade machines being built by others. Sometimes seeing those machines made me want to quit building my own Arcade cabinet since it was just a plain old Project Arcade machine. Anyway, every day I would surf to www.byoac.com to see what was on the front page. And I would think to myself, "Someday I will have a machine on the front page of BYOAC." Finally after years of work I finished my cabinet. It came out better then I could have ever expected. The art looked cool. I was proud of my work and was anxious to send my work to the BYOAC site in hopes that it would make the frontpage. So I submitted my project...then every day I would check the frontpage...nothing....weeks passed by and I started to wonder if either Saint quit doing updates to his site or if my project didn't make the cut! FINALLY Saint updated the front page of his site and MY PROJECT MADE THE CUT! But what bummed me out was since Saint had not updated the front page on the BYOAC site in such a long time there was a lot of news that got built up. Unfortunately my project got pushed to the bottom of the news topics. Lost in a sea of news...

What a bummer.
Just thought I would share my sob story. Of course I am kidding. I LOVE the BYOAC SITE and the Forums are the best! I want to thank all you guys for the help! I have learned soooo much via searching this forum. I'm looking forward to starting my next project.
Thanks Saint for the Project Arcade book too. Helped me get started and I never looked back.

Great looking cabinet too.

I was a bit unsure about the project database too. I uploaded my project, but got an error at the end. So I wasn't sure it was actually sent. I checked just now and indeed it's there though.

I'll agree it's a cool cab for sure!

I must admit the first thing that caught my eye was the control panel. Effective, CLEAN, and looks nice.

I worked with Mitch Gardiner for my art. LINK He did a fantastic job. We traded emails for a few months before the art was finally finished. The best part about it is looking at the completed photoshop file on a computer monitor and then looking at the actual completed control panel and visually seeing the idea came to life. Pretty cool! I didn't think I would be able to pull it off.

By the way, you can't see it on the photos but if you look at the image you will see more clearly a music staff with notes. I had Mitch put the notes to the song "Money" by Pink Floyd on the music staff. I am a bass player and love to jam that song with the band!

Ironically, this arcade machine cost me a lot of money.... $:-\$

The Control Panel I built was probably the one thing that really held up the completiton of my project. I built pretty much two control panels (three if you count the one I screwed up using the wrong size drill bit which cut the holes too big

). I read forums and viewed what other people were doing. Then I designed what I thought would be best. After I built the first one I realized some of the buttons on the top were too low for my hands. I couldn't rest my hands on the panel and use the top buttons without hitting the buttons below with my palms. So, I decided to start over. Now the buttons are perfect for my big hands. I can easily rest my palms on the panel and use the top buttons. The topfire takes a little getting used to for some but once you start playing its not a problem.
I did have a friend come over who is a Golden Tee player and he was hitting the topfire every now and then when he was taking shots.
The only reason I put the top fire on the panel is so I could play TRON. I was a big TRON fan back in the day.

I am going to add another button on each side for pinball tilt. Future Pinball is pretty sweet!! I wish it looked a little better on my TV though.

Nice job on the cabinet.

It looks like your control panel top was originally a Lusid shaped panel but then migrated to a smooth curve.

How did you cut the curved panel and get the artwork to match up?

Correct. It was originally shaped like the Lusid panel. When I decided to start over I decided at that time to have the art match up with the buttons and joysticks. That is when I consulted Mitch. I told him since I was going to cut a new panel anyway that I would like a curved front. So he designed the art that way and created a drilling template. With the template I was able to trace the curve and use a jig-saw to cut it. Also, with the drilling template you are assured that the art will line up properly.
Drilling template is the key!

I have visited your site in the past and have read a lot of your posts on the BYOAC forums. In fact, there was a time where I was reading the thread about the building of your "Woody" project and I wanted to take a sledge hammer to my cabinet after seeing your work! You make some KILLER stuff! Your stuff puts other projects to shame.

I was thinking about doing a juke box next to serve my massive music collection. Once again, I could only DREAM of my project turning out as nice as the Metal Station!

I wish I lived near you so I could stop by and have a beer at that sweet bar too!

Dont feel bad it got pushed down a bit, I read all the news, and alwasy look at new cabs (and i bet everybody who knws there is a NEWSPAGE deos too). I feel the way you did (not the news post stuff) I built my cab 5+ years ago and the stuff i see ( including yours) puts my plain old box to shame. Thankfully being plain doesnt hinder the fun of playing. I look at all the amazing projects and finished stuff here an i alway say "I'm going to build another one" but I jusst dont have the time anymore (got a new passion, FIERO's!) Maybe this winter.

I saw your machine on the front page, most people who look at the news look at everything no matter how far down. I even checked out the monstrosity of an XBOX cab by the mexican fellah (his page ended up being a couple pix on a myspace page but I digress)

Your machine is very clean very nice and looks a crap ton better then my plain jane cab
