« on: July 28, 2007, 08:01:37 pm »
Whats the best way to notch the MDF for T-molding? Is there a tool that works pretty good?

Thanks

A slot cutting bit used with a router.   Sized for your specific t molding.

Slot cutter blade and arbor required.

A dremel does not have enough power to drive a slot cutting bit safely.  Some people have tried to use a dremel with a router attachment to cut slots but I do not remember one posting that was a real success because the bits on the dremel are not the same as a router slot cutter.

also trying to keep it steady would be quite interesting.  Even a cheaper router would be better than trying to use a dremel for this type of job.  I went cheap and brought a ryobi one from home depot for 59 bucks and it more than pay for itself.

And the bit above are nice ones.

An even cheaper option would be to get a noname crap one off ebay.  Picked one up for like 35 shipped for my cab.  Actually lasted much longer than I expected.  Finished the cab and it still works great.

A dremel should have the power to cut the mdf, but you would need some sort of mount or holder to make it work.  Also, I don't think you can get slot cutter bits for a dremel.  If you could make a mount to control the depth of the cut and attacht the bit somehow, it would work.

If you don't want to go to the expence of buying a router and slot cutting bit do what another member here did.  Cut off the 'T' portion of the molding and using contact cement, glue the molding onto the cab.

I was just thinking today.... my neighbor is a carpenter :banghead: I don't know why I haven't thought abought this sooner. If He has a router I can get him to do this.
I'll go buy the bit and have him do it then.

He probably has the arbor too if he has a router and set of bits.  Maybe check before buying the bit.  You might get away with just the cutter or he might even have that.

Since Nitewalker's not on here anymore, I'll say it: just buy a router - they're awesome!  :)
