Playchoice 10 + Super Mario Bros ARCADE version
« on: August 26, 2007, 01:48:52 am »
I had an idea I wanted to bounce off some other arcaders. I have a Playchoice 10 Nintendo cabinet that has Super Mario Bros. This is of course the NES home version. I am aware that you can substitute the two rom chips on the Playchoice game boards with other game images (I.E. Swap Metroid chips with TMNT chips) and the games will still load (although the menu will display the wrong game name). I know that arcade rom images can be loaded with NES home emulators if patched/combined properly. The only thing I am unsure of is if you can patch the rom of the arcade version of SMB to Free Play mode and if this were accomplished would you be able to press "Player 1" or 2?

Anyone tried this?

That's right. But if a Nintendo vs Unisystem rom was put in the machine, the code in that rom will wait until quarters are inserted. When quarters are inserted into a Playchoice they just add to the total time. There is no 1P (unless one of the other buttons registers as 1P or Coin Slot 1).

I don't think that any of the Playchoice buttons map to "Insert Coin" on a VS-Unisystem.   The Playchoice-10 uses a separate menu processor (Z80) to regulate the coins, where on a VS system, coins are controlled by the game processor (N2A03).   However, the coin inputs MIGHT work if a VS ROM was connected to an NES, as controller 2 Start & Select, but I could be wrong.   I know Nintendo mentions in its manuals about select and start working on controller one only, but I beleive the NES version of John Elway's Quarterback uses the Player 2 Select & Start.   I personally beleive that the reason Nintendo only intended them to work on controller #1 was because the VS System used them as coin inputs, but I could be wrong.
