If MAME does LD, is there a point to Daphne?
XtraSmiley:
As I'm waiting for all the parts to my cab to arrive, I started gathering the software I will need to run my system. I've never run Laser Disk games and decided to check Daphne out. I haven't down loaded it yet, but it seems nice and simple, but I've read about MAME getting LD support.
Can someone who keeps up with the development of both systems chime in and let me know if I should even bother with Daphne or will MAME have everything I need soon?
Thanks.
Howard_Casto:
The answer is you have to use both. If and when daphne support in mame is completed, Aaron Giles seems to want to use these really big video files.... WAAAAAY bigger than those used in daphne. With that being said, mame will support games that daphne doesn't, such as the american laser games shooters.
XtraSmiley:
Yes, but ignoring the big file (hey the 1TB HD is only $400 now!) issue, will MAME be able to play all the LD games that Daphne can or just the ones it can't?
ahofle:
Depends how long you are willing to wait. MAME doesn't play any LD games now and there is no definitive answer on when it will. The short answer is if you want to play LD games now, you need Daphne.
Havok:
Hopefully Aaron decides to use a manageable file size for the video. I don't think somewhat larger files is such a bad thing - hard drive costs have plummeted, so storage isn't as much an issue as it used to be. I would really rather have these games available via Mame - I think in the end it will be better. For example, Daphne seems to only support keyboard encoders now. Currently there is only spotty at best support for a true joystick...
