So who all here stuck with the show Jericho?
« on: May 11, 2007, 11:08:07 am »
I watched the finale last night, and feel very fortunate that I decided on a wild hair to watch this show from the start. Sure, it had some rough patches along the way as they figured out what worked and what didn't, but the end product, especially the last two episodes was excellent!

In the past, I grew to love the characters on Buffy and Angel (Too bad Whedon ruined Buffy in season 7 because by the end I didn't care any more). There have been other shows that over the span of seasons I have grown to care about the characters. Having said that, Jericho is the only show I have ever seen that has led to me deeply caring for the characters in the first season (Firefly came close, but they were only just starting to hit their stride when the plug was pulled). The finale was heart wrenching, and the character stories were so incredibly good that the way the episode ended was not even slightly disappointing. Having said that, I will personally burn down the CBS main office if they don't renew Jericho. ;D

I would like to see if anyone else on here has an opinion (without spoilers if possible  ;))

The season started out pretty slow, but I agree that the last half of the season was really good.

Jericho is one of my favorite shows!  I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the will definitely be back for a second season.

Don't bet on it.  Here is what the TV and radio columnist of my "local" paper said about Jericho:

CBS' "Jericho" ended its first (and possibly only) season Wednesday with the death of Gerald McRaney's character, the town patriarch. The fact that first-tier characters survived week after week was a serious flaw in what could have been an edgy, paranoid thriller about life in a small town after mysterious nuclear blasts. It felt more like a '70s drama than something from the '00s.

More damaging to the residents of fictional Jericho, Kan., was what everybody in the TV biz now agrees was the disastrous concept of the winter hiatus.

Hot shows like NBC's "Heroes" and ABC's "Lost" took major ratings hits after their lengthy disappearances. And when CBS unveils its fall schedule next week, don't bet on "Jericho" being there.

Oh and for the record, I watched the first two episodes before giving up.

I probably saw the first 4 or 5 episodes I liked the first couple couple of episodes not that they were that great just that I saw potential in the the story but was dissapointed that it went nowhere. I think it could have been a great show but did not quite made it.

Saw the final episode and much to my surprise I did not feel I had missed anything.

Another show I can't believe that was cancelled was Drive.  There were only a couple of episodes aired, but it looked like it could be a really good show.  The same producer also did the shows Firefly and Wonderfalls, which are both some of my favorite shows even though they were cancelled after a few episodes.

Drive didn't have a prayer. It was set up to fail from the beginning. I made a vow to not even watch it, because I couldn't bear to get hooked on a show that gets yanked before it finishes again.

Yes and as we all know, the columnist of your "local" paper runs cbs and therfore because he gave a bad review it'll be pulled.  Jericho is cbs's highest rated show outside of survivor.  It's almost guaranteed to come back next season.

I liked drive too but I almost knew it'd be cancelled because

1.  It's on fox.

2.  It had acting and producing talent from firefly, which links them back to Josh Wheadon.  Fox can say what they want, but they are still pissed at him for giving the wb buffy instead of them (even though they own the rights to buffy and still get a chunk of the change).

Every single show or movie they've approved from him or even shows with people related to him have been cancelled.  Of course mindless crap like "the world's blank-edy-ist blank" are still aired on fox constantly.  Other networks have a little bit of artistic merit and will ride out a critically acclaimed show with poor ratings.  Not fox though, they'll cancel you on the second episode if you dip too far.

I remember reading one of the reasons they cancelled Drive was because it aired before 24 and a recent episode of 24 had the lowest ratings the show ever had.  Of course it had to be Drive's fault, not the fact that Heroes is on at the same time as 24 and Heroes was airing its first new episode in a while.

Am I missing the sarcasm or something?  I must be taking that out of context.
Season ratings

CSI
CSI Miami
Without a Trace
Two and a Half Men
CSI NY
Criminal Minds
NCIS

All appear in the top 20 for the 2006-07 season.

Jericho is nowhere to be found.

Even the week of 4/30 - 5/06 didn't have Jericho in the top 20.

Ratings for the finale

I caught all the episodes up until the hiatus.  I, like many people, was waiting for something to happen.  Or at least for them to give us some tidbits of information about what the hell was going on.  It didn't seem like they were giving us any bait to bite when it came to juicy storyline bits.

Saw the last five minutes of the finale.  It finally looked like they got something going.  Looks like it may have been too late, though.

I may watch again if they renew it.

Anybody with half a brain could see Drive wouldn't make it.  From the previews, it just didn't have it.  And like mentioned before, Fox likes to jump off the wagon miles before it even approaches the cliff.

I watch 24, tape Heroes.   :)

I must be missing it also.  I found a list of the Top Programs on Broadcast and Subscription TV: Households for Week Ending 5/2/2007.

Howard, take a look at that list.  Jericho is 45th overall on the list for that week.  There are 18 other CBS shows that did better than Jericho.  And Survivor wasn't even CBS's top rated show for that week, it was 10th!

I checked out that link. A 2.1,  ouch! initially this year, I thought the winter break would be a pretty good idea. I like the fact that the shows I watch could close out the last episodes on consecutive weeks. Every show that did a break returned with Horrible numbers after the break. Lost is WAY down, Heroes dropped off quite a bit. I knew Jericho dropped off, but DAMN! A 2.1 on a primetime drama finale during sweeps!!! Thank you short attention span America for killing another show I like!!!

PS. after seeing that, I agree that CBS likely won't bring it back. I can still hope though, right?

Week to week ratings are not what networks go by (unless the network is fox) Jericho's over all season rating makes it around #2, under survivor.

What in the hell are you talking about???  Did you even look at the link I gave above?  You must really like this show and are delusional about its ratings.  Show us some proof of this alleged "#2" rating you speak of.  Or is this just a 'feeling' you get?  Hell, you state Survivor is CBS's number one show.  Not according to the ratings.  CSI is.

CSI is consistently, week after week, CBS's highest rated show.  Jericho, on the other hand, is about the 14th to 20th best CBS show based on ratings.  I'm not making this stuff up - its there in the link.  Jericho is always (yes always) behind CBS shows like: CSI, CSI: Miami, Without A Trace, NCIS, Cold Case.

For the Jericho fans out there, please don't get me wrong, I'm not ripping Jericho.  I actually watched the first two epsiodes and it wasn't for me.  But to have Howard state that Jericho is the number 2 show at CBS is just plain wrong.  I think Howard has a soft spot in his heart for Jericho and is just hoping against hope that it will continue into a second season.

To be fair, Jericho was pretty hot before the winter break. CBS was pushing it hard, it was on the cover of TV Guide, etc. After the break, noone ever came back to watch except the devoted fan-base, and even alot of those never came back. Personally, I think the show should get another chance because it did show it could be a hit before the disastrous break.

Well, because you said it was pretty hot before the winter break.  The ratings don't really show that.  They may have been pushing it more on TV commercials, but the ratings stayed pretty much the same.  The info I put together below came from http://www.tvb.org, under the "Research Central" menu option.

Week Ending October 29, 2006
37th Overall, 17th best CBS show

Week Ending November 5, 2006
41st Overall, 20th best CBS show

Week Ending November 12, 2006
40th Overall, 19th best CBS show

Week Ending November 19, 2006
49th Overall, 20th best CBS show

Week Ending November 26, 2006
35th Overall, 17th best CBS show

Week Ending December 3, 2006
35th Overall, 15th best CBS show

Week Ending December 10, 2006
BEGINS WINTER HIATUS

Week Ending February 25, 2007
RETURNS FROM WINTER HIATUS
39th Overall, 17th best CBS show

Based on that info, the ratings pretty much stayed steady leading up to the break and coming out of it.

Again, I'm not ripping the show.  Just showing what the ratings info is saying.

He could in the short term, I'd think, until they finally bury Orton and Kennedy comes back from his latest injury.

And they need to find someone to use all the TV time other than Edge.  The last time one guy got so much time so often he was nailing the boss' daughter.

Honestly I haven't been able to watch more than a few minutes here and there of WWE in a long time.  The last time RAW was in town my cousin gave me an extra ticket and I had a very hard time sitting through the entire show.

I've been watching some TNA and following a local indy promotion these days.

Sacrifice was TNA's best show in quite a while.  It was a step in the right direction for them.  They are about to lose their main source of industry credibility, though.  It will be interesting to see how that plays out for them.

Ring of Honor is the thing to watch now.  Great promotion, I get to see them once or twice a year, and they're just about to hit PPV for the first time.

Yea, I've heard alot of ROH, but haven't had a chance to see them.  Didn't TNA pull all of their talent from ROH?

Alot of the TNA guys wreslte for IWC (the local promotion in Pittsburgh) so I get to see them on a regular basis.  IWC just had their big show of the year this past weekend and it featured Eric Young, Jay Lethal, Sonjay Dutt, and a completely unprofessional, totally drunk Brother Runt.

ROH, to my knowledge, never had exclusive contracts.  Many of the TNA home grown stars did spend time in ROH but not many of them fully developed there.  ROH doesn't run enough shows or pay enough to have exclusive guys building only there.

Ha.  Brother Runt lives not far from here.  Are you aware that is his current gimmick?  I'm not saying it's impossible he really was drunk, but that's the gimmick he's running with now, he's the drunk Dudley.

No he was actually drunk.  My cousin is one of the wrestlers for IWC and he said runt had been drinking all day.  After his match you could see him in the balcony area drinking from a flask and looking like he was about to puke.

Apparently the guy Runt wrestled, Hentai, had to be physically restrained from killing him after the match.

Yeah, that sounds like the logical result of being that drunk during a show.

Oh well, at least I feel a bit satisfied with the way the show ended. It would be cool if sci-fi channel would pick up network cast-offs though.

Interesting development here:
http://forums.go.com/abc/primetime/lost/thread?threadID=1698441&forumStart=0

Apparently fans are amassing large orders of Nuts to CBS corporate...if you watched the show, you get it.

The dreaded "TV movie" story popped up by the corporate to try and appease people. Hmmm... I remember this empty response from somewhere else...hmmm...maybe from the promised Angel movies that were never even truly considered??

Either way, it will be interesting to see if this really does have an effect or not. Maybe they could still bring it back for a mid-season replacement? ;D
