I'm posting this in the software section because, well if I don't have a site to put it on, you guys don't get anymore software.  ;)

It's a goodnews/badnews thing.....

The good news is that due to the fact that the old lazarus site was cross-linked more times than a chain-link fence, caching services like the way-back machine have my site on file and I've managed to recover about 95% of it, files and images included.

The bad news is a few files were lost..... Some old (now defunt) wrappers, the gif-based logo pack, and the keypress wrapper, which I still have the source to so I should be able to rebuild it.

Saint and a few others have offered to host, so I'm not worried about that.  (If nothing else I'll just buy a domain outright.)  I do need help with the site rebuild though as my web-based tech is out of date and I'm not good at building sites anyway.

The old site used to run on moveable type, but I'd like to switch to something better.  The only requirements I have is that it's free, It's easy to install, and it's easy to integrate into the existing site (as in maybe a snippet of javascript to say where the blog goes in the html).

The other major upgrade I'd like to add is download tracking.  We used to have limited tracking for a while, but it broke quickly.  I'd like something that's free, easy to install and again easy to implement.  The ability to limit downloads or send me alerts of high useage would be nice as well, but it isn't required.

I welcome any help and advice anyone can give..... the sooner I can get the site up the sooner I can get back to actually making software.  ;)

Would Drupal fit your requirements?  I could set you up with it in a matter of minutes.  My server has Perl, PHP 4 & 5 w/Zend & eAccelerator, mySQL 5, Python , and Imagemagick w/GD so any CMS or Blog software should work as long as it isn't ASP or .NET.  PM me if you are interested.  I'd be willing to give you hosting free.  I'd consider it payment for all the software of yours I've used over the years.

I've administered a Xoops! site before and that is quite a nice portal system. It allows you to have news, downloads, forums etc. all in a nice clean interface that can be (relatively) easily skinned. I've made skins for it before.

But I've been having a look at PHP-Nuke as well, and that seems quite popular. I would probably be more inclined to try that as it seems more commonly used these days.

For something a little simpler, there is something like wordpress. But I'm not sure if there is a nice download's area for that.

All these can be administered online with their own password protected admin section.

You know it would be cool if Saint hosted a portal system for us developers that we could all have admin access to. Then we could just post news about new tools and utils on there and have them for download in one central place.  We could have our own little forum too. byoacdev? That would be cool!

Howard, you may want to look at this site:
http://opensourcecms.com

It lets you look at and try out a whole bunch of different cms/blogs.  you can log in as an admin and "try before you buy"

thanks random, I'll play with that this weekend and see which one i prefer

hk saint has expressed to me on a few occasions that he'd like to have more content to host.  You should drop him an email about it.

Ok, guys.. I have hosting again!

http://dragonking.arcadecontrols.com

Please note that I am NOT open for business yet.  The main page is up, but nothing works yet.

I'd still love advice on blogging software though.  Things should be back to normal by month's end.
