Test/Repair Space Duel (MA)
« on: July 15, 2007, 12:20:06 pm »
got a chance today to pull the back off this once again just to refresh myself on it. I checked my +5v at the test point on the board, it was 4.6,i bumped it up to 5. Comfortable with that reading and with little expectations i placed in another board i happened to pick up some time ago. I get the same result.....solid lighted cones. Test mode only gives me tones for each button(it is not playing blind just generating a single tone for each button). voltage reads ok and tones are present.SO i assume my AR/II is ok??

this was a while ago that i worked on it last but i was getting faint flashes on the screen at one point. Remembering that and not seeing them today i turned the brightness up a bit to see a bright dot in the middle....no flashes.

WHEN THIS GAME DIED...It didn't just go blank. game seemingly worked on pickup. Owner had no worries plugging it in and letting me play. I brought it home and played for some time....an hour or so maybe. Played a few times here and there for short times, shutting down each time. Rather quickly, each time i played, the game would reset on me. At one point it would play until i hit thrust or fire ,giving me quick flashes here and there but once i fired a shot it would reset totally on me. Then it finally went. During that short time trying to diagnose the problem i had replaced big blue and bridge rectifier only as i had them on hand.
would love to get this game working

since game is not playing blind and voltages are ok, is there anything else to consider other than a problem at the board? If not, i am either looking to buy a working board, or have at least one of these repaired and trade the other or even trade both toward a working one.

1. Absolutely double check ALL voltages coming to and from the ARII.
check for burnt resistors etc

2. Check and clean all pins and edge connectors.

Does the test mode produce any tones when you first activate the switch?
(without pushing any buttons)
Not a technician . . . . just a DIY'er.

I quadruple checked voltages...put the game away for a bit and double checked them again....they seem fine unless i am misunderstanding something. I definitely get a solid 5v at the test point of the game board. I cleaned the edge of the game board and it's connectors but did nothing to the ARII connectors.

I believe switching into test mode has produced me a tone. That is something i will have to try again to verify.

At the moment the game is put aside again. I am hoping someone out there can test/work on these or trade me ???  or maybe someone has a WORKING board for sale?

Dude just bring the board and monitor over to Steve.  It's a ten minute drive.

Monitor is fine.
I didn't know Steve worked on Vector boards. To be honest, He just never came to mind for that. if it were my monitor though, that needed work, I'm sure i would have just gone to him first off. I'm still in denial it is a board issue. I keep going back and forth on that though.
I'll give it a shot and stop badgering the groups each time i get a chance to work on it.

Steve will fix anything electronic.  Doesn't matter if it's a game or not.

I say bring the monitor because he may not have a fully working color vector on hand when you bring your board in.  He'll be able to power it and everything but he may need your monitor to do the work.
