Attention RUSH fans.
« on: May 02, 2007, 01:17:59 am »
I just wanted to let everyone interested know that the new Rush album "Snakes and Arrows" was released today.  I picked it up this morning, and I must say that it is the best Rush album to come along in a while.  Definitely worth a listen.

Thanks,
Geo
Please!  Give me the good news first!

Rush is an excellent band. :notworthy:  I have heard one song played on the radio from their new album.  I hope to purchase the new album some time this year.

Does they still have that same wannabe drummer?

Neil Peart is a great drummer.  Have you guys ever listened to the song "YYZ" that has some amazing drum work in it.

Here is a youtube video of Rush in concert playing "YYZ":

Go about halfway through the video and you can see Neil Peart's drumming skills.

I agree that there seems to be no middle ground with Rush's music.  People either love it or hate it, there are not too many casual listeners.  I believe it does say alot for Rush that they are still generating new material when most bands still active from this generation are releasing greatest hits albums or doing nostalgia tours!

Now if they could only release some instrumental versions of their stuff... great work, great music, suckass WTF is he talking about lyrics.

This really is the greatest Rush album in a long time.  At least since their last one.

I'm Canadian.  It is required.  You're allowed to tool on Brian Adams, you're allowed to say "I was an Alanis fan for her first album only", but you must be a Rush fan.  If you are not they revoke your maple leaf.

Are you kidding me, He's in a league of his own. He's precise, crisp and sounds like he plays with an extra arm or 2. I remember hearing more than once that, man for man, they are the best rock band around. Remember, they only have 3 guys in the band, but it sounds like they have 5.

You're thinking of Loverboy.  Rush ditched the mullets sometime in the 80's.

I'm actually not really a Rush fan.  Loved them when I was in high school, but can't listen to them anymore.

Same here.  Was a big Rush fan up until around "Counterparts".   Still think they're a really good band - but never really kept up with their new stuff, and can only really listen to them in small doses.

Can anybody shout out some drummers that they consider to be great?

That one-armed dude from Def Leppard?

Depends on your definition (and musical preference): many would say someone like Terry Bozio, who can do four-part poly-rhythmic/poly-metric stuff...but is it musical? Being able to play rhythm doesn't inherently mean you can compose it.

But Neil's a good drummer.

I was fortunate enough to study under a guy named Jeff Campitelli; who has been Joe Satriani's drummer for the past 25 years. Although Satriani requires the drums to take back seat to the guitar, Jeff is an amazing drummer.

Neil Peart is amazing. Others who have been inspirational to me:
Keith Moon
John Bonham
Stewart Copeland
David Garibaldi
Terry Bozzio
Jonathan Mover
Vinnie Colaiuta
Simon Phillips
Alex VanHalen

Chiming in a little late here, been busy.  :)

I did a cover of "Chemistry" on two Roland TD7 kits, strung together to form one mondo, Neil Peartish kit.  I no longer have those - got some real drums now.  ;)

“Chemistry” is a result of my drumming and some guy I don't know doing the rest!  I "met" him through a Rush Internet newsletter (he and the singer live in Jersey) and we “talked,” via e-mail, of doing a cover of a Rush tune.  We decided on "Chemistry" (Signals - 1982; track #3).  I did my part and e-mailed off the 50+ megabyte .WAV file to him to complete.  The entire track was done via e-mail in 1995.  On 56k.  :P

So, this is me, real time, with no click or accompaniment by a CD, do all the drumming - playing strictly from my head.

Tell me what you think of the playing, or not.   :dunno

I love the way Kaizers Orchestra performs. They are a band from Norway and I don't know if the drummer is all that great per say, but the way him and that crazy looking "paino" player get down, I can't help but have a good time.

Take a look:

PS - Everything I've heard from Rush is gold, but I haven't heard their new stuff so I wouldn't know about that.

You know what else gets everyone into a controversy? Freebird. I'm so sick of that song, but so many swear by it.

TexasMame/John - Nice playing! Hard to nail those parts, especially playing solo... TD7's eh? Classic! I sold my '69 Ludwig acoustics and now play on a Clavia Ddrum4 electronic kit... Kept all my cymbals of course for gigging. Somewhere I have a cassette of me playing YYZ with a band I played in years ago...

Thanx!  I rush a couple spots, especially the end fills but hey. . .

Yeah, I had two of them connected together.  Traded one for a Ludwig "Butcher Block" kit and sold the other.  Eventually, sold the Ludwigs, for my current kit (both pictured here).  It hasn't been unpacked since moving, tho.   :'(

always wanted to be a drummer... to old to start now. Did brass in HS. Can't get my hands and feet to work independently no matter how much I try during airdrum sessions.

It's curious how often brass and percussion are mixed, sometimes played by the same person.

Texas: nice toms. Double-kick pedal?

Nice set! Dunno how you have room for your arcade collection and your drums... Wish we had basements in California...!

Heh. The arcade collection was on the finished side of the basement; drums unfinished.  Arcade/Atari collections were sold prior to my moving from NH.  No basements in Texas either.  :(

Yes, DW double kick.  You can't really tell in the pics, but the hi-hat is a remote hi-hat (DW remote cable) , set in fairly close and low to me.  Just prefer it there - easier for crossovers.  :)

I'm pretty lucky in that drumming just comes naturally.  With few exceptions, if I can hear it, I can play it.  Maybe not right away, but after working on it a bit, I can usually get anything that is thrown at me, provided it's interesting to me (no Dream Theater for example).

Dream Schmeater, bah.  Yeah, I've heard of that kind of hi-hat, T. Sounds neat. How do you feel about the response of two mallets on one kick when doing triplets and stuff?

Never had a problem with it.  Then again, I've never used two independant kicks.

Funny, today, as I was riding my bike through a medical clinic sort of district, I smelled what distinctly seemed the aroma of crystal meth manufacture. Smelled fairly clean as such things go, too.

Doh! Totally should have had Nick Mason in my list.  :banghead:

Not a very technical player but certainly inspirational and influential in the evolution of rock drums. Nick's memoir, "Inside Out: A Personal History of Pink Floyd" is a fascinating read! He admits to being envious of Keith Moon's wild drumming. If you ever get a chance to see it, Nick's playing in the film "Pink Floyd: Live in Pompeii" is excellent.

As with any instrument, the drumming (or percussion, depending) has to fit the context. There are various degrees of success. Coroner's album Mental Vortex is an example of tasty drumming - double kick when necessary, surrounded by lightly syncopated, and even simple, beats - that complement and complete the pieces. Master of Puppets is close in this regard - whereas Justice blew, drum-wise.

Pretty much anything.  I usually only play tunes that are fun/challenging to play alone since I just play with myself.  :laugh2:

Subdivisions, Limelight, Time Stand Still, Red Barchetta, and Time and Motion all by Rush get regular plays.  I also like "Heartbreaker" by Pat Benetar and "Running in the Family" by Level 42.  Whatever pops into my head, really.

Sometimes I'll just solo/jam/practice with the bass foot hitting the downstroke and the hi-hat foot hitting the upstroke and my hands just playing whatever feels good on top of that.

I can't, however, do "The Drum also Waltzes" part of Neil's solo, with the bass/hat/hat, bass/hat/hat thing going on.  I can do it when it's just my feet, but when I throw hands into it, I'm screwed.   :)

You have to develop your limbs, polyphonically. This actually starts in hearing polyphonically. And, no Pantera, etc?!

Mostly for Rush stuff but, on occasion, I love to overplay the hell outta "Every Breath You Take" for example.   8)

No metal makes a boy narrow. Alas. I for years wanted to do a heavy version of 'Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic', but never got around to it. Then, some (largely) online-promoting band did it...well, sorta...they're, like, new rock. It's still tasty but not as cool as mine would've been.

The other thing about Rush (and many other bands then and since) is their production, particularly of the drums, stayed kinda rock. I mean, some scooped mid (or even the other way, Carcass Heartwork) guitar would've been killer. Of course, that's partly where bands like Dillinger Escape Plan and such come in. Anyways, Neil's drum sounds, especially the kick, didn't have that solid, marching band kind of sound. Enter Pantera and Sepultura: both Vinnie's and Igor's kicks and toms were ---smurfin--- tough-sounding.

And both had some good kick syncopated stuff - a fave of mine is Igor's stuff on Arise. That album is epic, especially cos of his drumming.
