Laser disk games in Mame

Why are games like Mach3 and Us vs Them somewhat emulated in mame and the Dragons Lair type games aren't? Yet isn't the Dragon's Lair driver include in mame, but not active?  Just curious.

I think the Daphne message board explains this if you dig thru it.  I don't remember the exact reason, but it has something to do with the graphic overlay over the laser disk footage if I recall correctly.

It's a Mame Dev issue.  They feel that using the mpeg rips of the games isn't true emulation or some such nonsense.  Arroding to the personal wip from the guy who is working on the laser disc games, he doubts they will be included in an official build of mame unless he changes their mind.

The reason is the patent/license issues of the MPEG codecs.    Someone could make a claim against the MAME team, if they found out.    

There are other codecs being considered, but it will be a while off.

Consider Daphne (daphne.rulecity.com) if you like LD Games.    It supports Dragons Lair, Space Ace, Thayers Quest, Super Don Quixote, Galaxy Ranger, Starblazer, Cliff Hanger, Cobra Command, and Bega's Battle.

Daphne needs BOTH the rom images, and the video.    For the video, it supports connecting an LD Player to the computer via serial cables (output to a TV), MPEG1, and MPEG2.   You can even use a DVD-ROM of Dragons Lair or Space Ace from Digital Leisure, with a conversion tool as well.
