Modded xbox...HDD problem?
« on: March 20, 2007, 09:13:58 am »
This is an old problem that I never got round to fixing...

I modded my xbox and put a 120gig HDD in it.  The HDD had been in use in my PC but only for backups, and not for very long.  Got the Xbox working fine and transferred my games to the HDD, got it up and running in my cabinet, worked brilliantly...

However I noticed the colours on a certain screen in Soul Calibur 2 were corrupt, for a brief time after hitting start to return to the title screen.  This was no real biggie, but I tried re-transferring it over but to no avail.

The next thing that happened is games started randomly stopping, and saying 'cannot read disc' or words to that effect...as I wasn't using the DVD drive this points to a hard drive issue.

Just curious if anyone has had or heard of problems like this?  I tried formatting it with the xbox but no joy (how does an xbox format a drive so quick?).  I wondered if I should put the drive back in a PC and format/check it?  It just seemed wierd to me as the HDD was pretty new...

Edit: I realise I haven't given any specific details, I guess if it is a hard drive problem it the same would occur regardless of mod chip etc.  However IIRC I have an Xecuter chip, and UnleashX dashboard.

Minwah,
I would take the HDD out and format it on the computer then run a scan disk for any errors on the drive.
I had this happen on a few games a this fixed my problem

I just softmodded my XBOX last week,

Although i have not had a problem like yours,

I did have a problem with TIGER WOODS 2007.

My Disc would act like it was skipping on the Title screen,

I went and put it in my Son's XBOX, And it played fine.

So then i figured i would RIP it into my 120GB hard drive.

It did the same thing !

So i researched this on the internet.

Someone suggested to a person having the same problem with TIGER WOODS 2007.

That they clean out their CACHE folders on all their partitions.

So i tried it,  And BAM! The game worked fine after that.  On the Disc and HD.

So maybe this might help you with your problem ??

I thought i would just throw it out there.

Also i would get XBMC for a dashboard.

I had UNLEASH X,  And it was awful. Compared to XBMC.

Great, thanks for the advice.  I thought of doing that, but was a bit worried it might be for nothing!

I'm sure I tried that...

OK, will have a look.

I must admit it was so long ago that I last looked at this I can't remember what I'm doing any more.  I think once I have my cabinet at my current house I will set aside a weekend or 2...I miss playing Outrun 2 and Burnout 3!

sounds like you need a 80mm fan installed to replace the stock one and add some heatsinks to your mpcx chip if it does what you said first it sounds to me it has a heat issue if it is a v1.6 more then likely it is the mpcx and if a v1.0 the smaller fan is failing and a 80mm fan would do me personally I would add both anyhow.
