Loud screws?
« on: March 09, 2007, 12:59:10 am »
I finally got around to doing some cutting and assembly of my cabinet today.  During assembly of my base and TV supports, whenever I put screws into the MDF it gave off a pretty high pitched whine.  I didnt have any of the same noise with the 2x4s I was using for the TV support.  I drilled pilot holes, but I'm wondering if maybe the bit wasnt big enough?  I didnt get any splitting, but its pretty annoying.  Anyone else have this happen or have any suggestions?

It's just from friction. If you're not getting any splitting I wouldn't worry about it. You can also rub the screws with a candle or a crayon to lube em up a bit.

I use a putty stick. I find this actually gives you a tighter connection. I use this when a building a balustrade.

With MDF, the connection can't get much stronger than wood glue and screws...

If by putty stick you mean epoxy, it'll work, but epoxy is best for gluing oily woods or dissimilar materials in my experiences. Gluing non oily wood is a non issue if using wood glue as the bond is stronger than the wood itself.

What are your Balusts made of?

BTW, I like you cab design. Looks great.

If by wood glue, you are referring to that cheap yellow elmers crap, don't bother. I use this stuff called "Power Urethane". It's a polyurethane glue. You could seriously get away without screws with this stuff.....I accidently glued a support on the opposite side of my guide line, and I could not budge the damned thing....even whacking it with a hammer would not remove it.

Works GREAT

WD40 also works well, though if I was planning to stain my wood I'd probably stick with wax...

Use spit. It's cheaper.

I'm dying laughing at this thread.   :laugh2:

You want him to spit on his wood before he screws it?

Exactly! There's better things you can lube your wood with for screwing.

Previously mentioned: wax of some sort, wd40 (although that can be messy), even bar soap can work.

btb2k2; I don't like poly glues. They're very messy and foam when curing so there's that to scrape away after it cures. The bond is no stronger than any other glue. It's application is similar to that of epoxy in that it's best for joining dissimilar materials. It's overpriced as wood glue.

Titebond FTW.

No, I mean an actually putty stick. It looks like a crayon and I rub the threads through the stick. Its great for attaching the top rail of the balustrade to the newl post. Or newl post to the wall.

Screwing some drywall screws into 2x4s on Sunday my 5 year old asked me what that noise was.  I told him it was the wood screaming because no one likes to have screws drilled into them.   :laugh2:

I always cut small pilot holes through the MDF first, then drilled in screws into the holes...... guarantees the MDF will not split when the screw is secured.
