need testing of Space Duel board in MA
« on: March 11, 2007, 11:09:20 pm »
I am at a loss on this game. I started with a partially working game and now it is non-working. I am too new at this hobby to mess with it comfortably at this point.
the first problem was the game resetting on me. I ordered an ARII rebuild and rebuilt the powerblock too. While waiting for some parts i cleaned up the edge connector some and now i get nothing but the cone buttons lighting up solid. HOPING that it was just something that finally burnt out completely on the ARII  i did the rebuild and the upgrade with no change.
I am not going to do anything more until i know for sure the board is OK or not. Best i can tell, the voltages are good.
I'm hoping someone near me can check it out....with compensation of course.

solid cone lights.... one is to start and the other is for game select.....

first thing i would check is that you're getting a proper +5V from your power supply to your edge connector, then check your tests points to make sure it's getting through your board.  Rather than working on your original power supply (unless you just like the extra work) you should just install a new switching power supply and wire up the voltages.

If after all that you still have solid lights, then start by reseating all your socketed chips and checking your connectors for bad solder joints.  THEN, you can take your board to another game.

Of course, if you want to skip all that anyway and just test the board, you can always come back to it if you find out your board's okay.

Good luck!

Modessitt, thanks for the suggestions.
I actually did all that. When i first got the game it would reset on me after a couple of minutes. I had already needed parts for my Centipede power supply so i ordered a bunch of Atari kits. (got the Centipede going by changing big blue).  While waiting for the Caps to come in(took over 3 weeks!!!) I got anxious and worked on it a little more, cleaning the edge connector and what not. It progressively got worse. It would reset at the very touch of a button after a while and then finally nothing.
Finally the parts came in. I worked on the centipede first and got that going. Worked on the Power block for space duel with no change. I had a second ARII that definitely needed a rebuild so i did that and installed with no change again.
voltages looked good at first look, but i looked at it again last night and the 10.3 is up to 14!!
At this point i am wanting to make sure the board is still good. I am out of play time for the season(my work starts back up soon)and I am putting the game aside for a while and would like to at least know where i stand on it for when i can come back to it.
thanks

If you want we can set up a time for you to pop your game board into my Space Duel.  I don't think there is much risk to my game that way.  Now, I wouldn't say the same about the AR board going into my game... but the game board shouldn't be dangerous.

How old is the big blue in that Space Duel and have you rebuild the edge connectors?  Both are very common failure points in Atari cabs.

Hey Chad, I'll PM you for some time possibilities.

NO no no, i wouldn't ask to try the arII in yours for sure but if we can do just the mainboard that would great!!! then i can rest at ease until i can get back to work on it.
I did change out the Big Blue, it is now a Big Grey. I did not change out the connetors. Although i do have a few ARII boards in other games i tried for kicks with no change.

PM you soon

thanks
