Tmolding Slot cutting question. Lining it up.
« on: February 24, 2007, 11:10:03 am »
Hey guys.  I have already done the T-Molding for my main part of the cab, but now I am getting ready to cut the slot in my control panel top.  I want some info on centering the slot.  I would think the best way is to eyeball it on another 3/4" plywood, and cut a slot into some scrap.  Then after I cut the slot flip the wood peice over and see if the slot cutter will go in there.  If it doesn't I would need to adjust but if it does fit in there, I will know I have the exact center.

You know what I mean.  How would you guys do this.  There is room for some error because the stuff from T-molding.com was actually a little bigger than my 3/4" ply so I had some leeway.

On my Cab the Tmolding has about a 1/48inch left that hangs off on one side then maybe alittle 1/32 of the molding that kind of hangs off on the other side.  so that is okay, but I would just like to make sure I center it.

That's exactly how I did it and it worked great.  That said, the way to be absoultely sure it is centered is to adjust the slot bit in the router and then push it into (not running) into a scrap piece of wood.  Then turn the scrap piece over and do the same thing in the same spot.  If the bit is centered, the two indentions from the bit will ine up perfectly.  If not, it is not centered and you just adjust it until the two marks line up on top of each other.

That's also exactly how I did it - eyeballing was way more accurate than trying to use actual measurements for me.

Thanks folks I did it like that last night into some scrap wood.  I have the scraps from the actual control panel and I will do the same with that before I cut into the real control panel top.  Thanks guys it works great.  I got it to fit by flipping it over.  On the second try I adjusted the router and it is perfectly centered.
