Eprom readers/programmers
« on: January 25, 2005, 08:03:13 pm »
Does anyone have any links to a good Eprom reader/programmer and/or good info about them, or even how to make them.  Does anyone have any info on what's possible with these?  Is it possible to make changes to a game by copying the data to a pc, make your changes and write it to a new eprom?  What format is the information in once you get it onto your pc?  I've been wondering about this and I can't seem to find any threads that really get into it.

There are numerous prom/eprom readers/burners available ranging from prices of $50 to several thousand dollars available.

I have some programming abilities (Visual Basic and C++).  I can usually handle altering and editing already written code, that's the easy part.  What I'd probably be messing with would be Mortal Kombat 2 or 3.  I figured that someone's already done it for MK2, because there are a few hacked versions out there.  I have one set of hacked Eproms on my MK2 and I still have the old ones that I removed, so I was figuring if I could get the code in some sort of readable format I could compare the two and I'd have a starting point, learn from what other people already did.  But who knows.

So I guess I'd be best off finding the MAME versions of the Eproms and see what I can do with them before I dump some money on a eprom programmer.

If anyone else has anything to add, let me know.  Thanks for the help.

I don't think altering these games is quite as straightforward as editing some VB or C source code!

I think that's an excellent way to try it out.

JDR Electronics (www.jdr.com) has some good programmers at decent prices. Their "Modular Circuit Technology" brand is good. Check out the single gang programmer # MOD-EP1 or the 4 gang unit # MOD-EP4.

Hi there, hello Ken,
I have a MCT MOD-EP1 but cannot use it because the 5.25" floppy disk is out of order.
I'm buying a second one but I'm not sure that I can use its disk too
Is there somebody who can email me it?
Thanks for assistance.
Kind regards from Normandy.

JDR Microdevices has a lot of software for their line of eprom programmers available to download free on their tech supoort page. Manuals are there too.
