upgrading a rom using mame roms?

I am just curious about this.  The arch rivals I picked up is rev 2.0.  If I get the right chips, the mame rev 4.0 roms, and a rom writer I could upgrade to 4.0 in theory, right?

Certainly.... as long as the original hardware was the same for both.
