Many MAME questions
« on: January 10, 2007, 09:55:56 am »
What is the difference between all the MAME packages? There's MAME Plus, AdvancedMAME, regular MAME, and others. What do they do differently? Which is generally the best for Windows and which the best for Linux?

Anyone have any suggestions? I'm planning to run Linux, so any pointers on which MAME to use would be appreciated.

If you want something quick and easy just to use on your computer, go with MAME 32.  If you are building a cabinet and want something that looks real nice, you're going to have to do some research.

You are seriously limiting your hardware and software options by choosing Linux, but it seems that XMame and Wah!Cade are very popular with the Linux crowd...

Mame32 is a Windows app, so you probably don't want to try and get that running...

Wah!Cade
XMame

Wah!Cade looks good. For MAME, it looks like my choices are AdvanceMAME and X.MAME. But what are really the differences? One of AdvanceMAME's "improvements" is "Automatic creation of perfect video modes with the correct size and clock." Does that mean it tries to pick the best video mode and image enhancement? How does X.MAME compare?

I've been playing with the MAME video features lately, using MAME Plus, and in a lot of games when I use image enhancement, the game is shoved into a small box, usually off center. I'm just wondering if there's a MAME port that handles this better.

Thanks for the input.

I'm primarily a Windows guy, just a Linux dabbler...

(Havok drops head in shame)

But, I would recommend posting on the Wah!Cade forum, they would probably know more...
