Author Topic: Donkey Kong vs Donkey Kong Jr (Read 3512 times)

I have a chance at picking up a mostly working Nintendo Donkey Kong Jr machine for a pretty low price. I always enjoyed Donkey Kong, never played Junior, though. How does it compare? Additionally, the machine has a display problem. Owner says it works intermittently, and the monitor looses sync. How difficult a repair would it be?

I've always liked DK Jr. a little better. In Jr. you climb on vines to try and rescue DK Sr. from his cage that little bastard Mario has him locked in.

Cap kit and/or reflowing some solder joints should fix that.

I also think Jr. is a much better game. I still like the original, but I play Jr. way more often.

DK Jr has a bit more variety to the levels. I prefer it over DK

I like the colors better on Jr. as well. I even like DK3 more than the original.

I'm bouncing between this and two pins, both similarly priced to the Donkey Kong Jr, a Gottlieb Duotron, and a Stern Stars. I really am leaning in the direction of the Jr. Its close to where I live, in good condition, and cheap. Plus, if I don't like it, I could always concert the cab to original Donkey Kong, or another Nintendo game.

Or, you get the DK-Jr, and put the Double-DK kit on it, and have DK and DK-Jr in the same cab. That's what I have

I've been looking into that. Where do you get the boards for that, or is it just a matter of changing a few ROMS?

Aye, fever's dk3 looks purty hot. I still like dk2 best of the DKs though. How is it that you haven't played DK2 before though, Enterprise? If you boot it up in mame I bet you'll be sold on getting it.

I just never really liked any sequel games, other than Ms. PacMan of course. I didn't really think I'd like DKJr. I'll give it a shot in MAME now.

Are you trying to insinuate that DK3 sucks? Naw! DK3 rocks! Hell..all 3 DK's rock! DK1 is my favorite as it brings me back to when I was like 8 or 9 and spent so much dough in ACE HARDWARE trying to master DK...but then I remember how much money I spent at Stu's Liquor trying to master the super jump in DK JR....

DK3 I played once in a while when I was a kid, but really have gotten to enjoy via MAME...I am up to 241,000 on DK3, and I just can't get that elusive 100,000 with DK (all 5 of my highscores are in the 90K range).

EDIT: Woo Hoo! I just installed 2 brand new ball-top supers from Tornado Terry...and my FIRST GAME (even in 8 way mode) I got 100,700 points in DK...nice...a good joystick makes a HUGE difference.
