Emulaxian Guidance, er handholding
« on: April 10, 2003, 11:29:05 am »
Well, since I've upgraded to a beefier machine I've plunged into the all windows world and have been looking for a more robust FE than GameLauncher.

My latest stop on this journey is Emulaxian dot79.  I've set it up succesfully with MAME  (one small bug report: in the configuration tool, the "close" button doesn't close it, only ESC keypress will, FYI)

So, I'm a little burnt out and am having trouble grasping the docs/cfg for customization/etc... and was hoping for some general guidance/hand holding/pointers on the following questions.

* I want to use the gamelist mode exclusively and not use ANY 3d models (I'm sporting a voodoo2 + 2meg trident card for gawds sake!)
I set a bunch of things to falls in the config to achieve that effect.  I'm trying to go for a simple / clean - glauncer-esque look/feel... Any pointers for leaning and meaning the setup?

* Can I disable / remove cyclecade and 3dfpsarcade somehow ?

* Is there a default key (or assignable key) to "next" through the different category filter lists (instead of doing the shooting the galaxian menu thingie)

* is there a default key for switching emulators?

* Can a given emulator get it's own skin?

Sorry if these are all RTFM questions... my head starts spinning when I try to sort through readme =P

*Shrug* thanks for your patience, and sorry for my lack there of, of it (to work these issues out myself).

it should restart the fe at that point...

form the how to install section:
select the startup menutype and switching between the menutypes
First go to section 3 of the general configuration menu.
-If you want the fe to startup like regular frontend with the listbox menutype. Then set show3dmenu to false. If you also don't want to see the 3dmodel but instead bitmaps for the screenshot and marquee then set also showglcabsorpics to false.

* Can I disable / remove cyclecade and 3dfpsarcade somehow ?

yeah go to the key section and set kwhicharcade and kwhichmenu to empty/none you will never be able to go there from then on

* Is there a default key (or assignable key) to "next" through the different category filter lists (instead of doing the shooting the galaxian menu thingie)
no but you can use the listbox menutypeto select a different gamelist in skins\horizontal.cfg set gsmenu|listbox|
or use only one list and use the filters to select different categories

* is there a default key for switching emulators?
the fe organizes gamelists not emulators which is much more flexible.  each gamelist can contain games from any of the available emulators to the fe. see http://3darcade.mameworld.net/frontend/fereadme.htm#Hierarchy

* Can a given emulator get it's own skin?
every collection of gamelist and each individual gamelist can have its own skin

Thanks peter, I appreciate it.  That helps me unclutter my thinking.

i'm doing a little better reading through the docs since I pasted the text from the html version to word (i.e. black text on white background) =P

thanks again,

rampy

PS re: the config "close" button. I sometimes run the config without the FE running in the background - so when it goes to "refresh" it just blinks the display...  *shrug*

i see i just added the -cfg option mainly if the default settings would crash the fe ( )p( thinking about some sis boards using the default opengl renderer  ;) ) so you could still get into it...will make it restart the fe correctly also after using -cfg next release...

Rampy, did you have a look at the tutorial included in the docs folder?  I found it very helpful.
