Project Arcade Addiction
« on: September 04, 2006, 07:18:17 pm »
I started back in January, and just this past weekend finished the control panel for my MAME project. Most people seem to start by building the cabinet first (or cabinet and control panel together), but for my project, the control panel seemed like the place to start.

I've been documenting the progress on my web site - ArcadeAddiction.net

Here's a couple of pictures.

Crafty wasn't a big fan, but I think that thing is really awesome. If I wasn't scared of all that wiring I might mimic your design ;). One question for you: Why the joystick to the right of the second player 7-button layout? I have seen a street fighter cab that was laid out kinda like that before. Is that just for lefties or something?

Oh, and also. Do you have that seventh button down there for the 4-button typical neo geo layout? If so, you really thought of everything! I can't wait to see the rest of the machine.

As awesome as co-op robotron would be, Im pretty sure it doesnt exist. Im not questioning the 2 sets of duel sticks though. Infact the more thinking I do about it, the cooler it seems.  The only possible problem I could think of would be that the robotron joystick for player two would get in the way of a player reaching for the tron stick. I imagine youve tested that though.. with your prototype and all.. thinkin of everything.

Guess all thats left to say is that its lookin good to me.

Nice design - I like the placement of the coin up and player buttons. But, be a man and make all the buttons lit!

The player 2 right hand joystick serves two purposes - It's a digitally restricted 49-way (all the others are 8-ways) which I plan to use as the primary single player joystick for non-fighting games. That's also why I put two buttons in the middle. And secondly - Smash TV! As for the 7th button in the player 1 and 2 clusters, it should work for neo geo and also for classics such as Asteroids and Defender.

Thanks for the props.

As awesome as co-op robotron would be, Im pretty sure it doesnt exist.

Smash TV  ;D

I might have had it not been for the fact that I'd need another LEDWiz. Oh, and I've already got over $1000 invested in this thing!  :dizzy:

Generally when I hear the tearm franken-panel and overbuilt I think 'practical'.  A MAME cab demands a practical CP setup.  Kudos to your setup.

 ;D

You probably could have gotten away with 2 fewer joysticks if you would have went the Ultimarc Ultrastik 360 way. I came very close to going with the 2 level approach but decided to go for a different button layout that did not suit 2 levels as well (Project thread to follow soon). I used to think more frankenpanelly, but have changed my approach in my old age.

Nice job though.

I assume you’re suggesting that the player 1 and player 3 sticks be used together (with player 1 in diagonal mode) and the same for the player 2 and player 4 sticks (with player 2 in diagonal mode). The same could be achieved with digitally restricted 49-ways (although it would cost more). I considered that layout, but standing at an angle while playing a dual stick game seemed odd. Plus 4 360’s or 49’s would have cost much more than the simple 8-way supers.

No matter what anyone thinks of the panel, you gotta admit, that is a hell of a wiring job. Pretty damn neat and tidy in my opinion.

Don't make the classic mistake and start playing games as soon as the pc and monitor are in.  Finish the whole cab and then start playing.  I didn't even mount the PC untill it was all done.  Granted I tested the pc and monitor outside the cab w/ a keyboard but didn't play untill the last piece of t-molding was installed.   It would have added a month if I had a working cab -lol

Looking good!!

A bit more progress on the cab. I've added some wheels and the monitor and speaker shelves.

Progress continues slowly - I added a keyboard drawer. I don't really think this was necessary, but I had a really nice pair of full extension drawer glides left over from a kitchen renovation project - so I put them to good use.

I looked on your components section but I did not see the flight stick there. What did you use for the flight stick?

The grip is from an old Raider Pro (analog PC stick) and the base is a Happ Super. Here's how I made it: http://www.dndw.com/arcadeaddiction/8waytrig.htm. I haven't really put it to the test yet, but it feels a bit flimsy and the Happ base barely provides enough spring to keep it centered. When I built my cp, I made sure to leave enough room to replace the stick with a Happ 8-Way Trigger should I decide my home-brew doesn't work out.

The past few weekends I've been busy helping my friend build his mame cab (The Way Back Time Machine project). Yesterday I finally finished the construction on mine. All that was left to do was add the front and back door panels and some vents.

Most of my cab is build from 3/4 plywood to keep the weight down. The cp and any other removable panels (front door, back door, and keyboard drawer) are all made from MDF.
