Extract video from non-encrypted DVD
« on: October 04, 2006, 06:04:08 pm »
Hey, I rip DVDs all the time, but I've always ripped commercial DVDs straight to DIVX or ISO.  If I have a non-commercial DVD, say, one made with a personal camcorder, how can I extract the video directly into MPEG 2 video so that it can easily be edited?  I can rip the vob files easily enough, or rip directly to DIVX, but neither of those options make it easy to edit the video.

It's funny that it's so easy for me to do all the illegal stuff, but I'm running into problems working with legit video.   ;D

One forum suggested to rip the DVD as a single VOB file and then rename to .MPG (http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/26118)

Not sure if this works as I haven't had a chance to test.

If your camcorder records audio in the AC3 format, like some of the recent DVD recorders, you will have fun finding an editor.  Some will allow simple cuts, but alot of them won't deal with it at all.

If it's in MPG format, you should be fine.

I have Adobe Premier.  Never used it, but I just kind of assume it'll do everything because it's Adobe :)

Holy Cow!

I over heard the video guy on the phone with a client talking about converting vob files to video.  While I was looking for this thread he asked our resident dvd ripper if he knew anything, he then said the exact thing shmokes said about not knowing how to extract legal files.

I then forwarded CheffoJeffo's link to both of the guys and then let them know I did.

And here I was thinking arcadecontrols.com was hurting my job.

Thanks guys!
